About The Role

The Sr. Data Engineer at UnitedHealth Group is a pivotal role focused on designing, developing, and maintaining scalable data pipelines and enterprise data solutions. This remote position offers the flexibility to work from anywhere within the United States and involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to streamline data flow and optimize data architecture. The successful candidate will leverage their expertise in cloud platforms, data modeling, and ETL processes to support the organization’s mission of improving healthcare delivery through data-driven insights. This role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, strong technical acumen, and the ability to mentor junior team members. As part of the technology team, you will contribute to building robust data ecosystems that enable better decision-making, enhance operational efficiency, and support innovative healthcare solutions.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should possess an undergraduate degree or equivalent experience along with a minimum of five years of relevant experience working with modern relational databases and optimizing SQL statements. Candidates should have at least three years of experience building data pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Databricks, and related cloud services such as Synapse and Cosmos DB. Experience designing and deploying enterprise data solutions on cloud platforms, particularly Azure, is essential. Familiarity with Power BI for data visualization and reporting is also preferred. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate strong understanding of data warehousing concepts, RESTful service development, and DevOps practices in data engineering. Experience working with healthcare platforms or commercial software as a Data Engineer is highly desirable. The role also requires excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within diverse teams.

Responsibilities

  • Research, evaluate, and recommend innovative approaches to solve complex data challenges, designing efficient solutions for various project sizes and complexities.
  • Develop, test, deploy, and schedule sophisticated ETL/ELT processes to integrate multiple data assets across the organization, ensuring data quality and consistency.
  • Adhere to organizational standards and guidelines during the design, development, testing, and deployment phases of data solutions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams, providing clear communication, creative problem-solving, and technical expertise to achieve project objectives.
  • Partner with other technical leads and developers to support project planning, system design, and solution deployment activities.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, leveraging data storage and retrieval capabilities to enhance business operations.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
  • Support development, quality assurance, and operational teams during all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), ensuring smooth transitions from development to production.
  • Manage relationships with vendors and stakeholders to understand architectural impacts and optimize data acquisition strategies.
