Payment Specialist Architect (Part-Time, Remote)
Schedule: 20 hours/week (January – September)

About the Role
We are seeking a Senior, hands-on Architect-level Payment Specialist to join a highly collaborative East Coast payments architecture team for a part-time engagement. This role is ideal for an experienced professional who thrives in a team-oriented environment and can deliver expert-level architecture focused on managed service POS payment processing and gateway modernization.
You will play a key role in a major POS payment upgrade initiative across 120 retail store locations, integrating Verifone PIN pads and modernizing payment gateways within a hybrid on-prem + cloud payment stack.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide senior-level payment architecture leadership as an individual contributor within a cohesive team.
- Work hands-on with hybrid and legacy payment systems, including configuration, log interpretation, and gateway interactions.
- Conduct forensic troubleshooting, log replay tracing, and root-cause analysis for payment failures and compliance exceptions.
- Serve as a liaison to bank processors and managed payment service providers, ensuring secure payment flows and integration points.
- Validate PCI-DSS and P2PE cryptographic boundaries, encryption models, token flows, and gateway routing logic.
- Document and translate complex payment architecture into clear narratives for engineers and stakeholders.

Required Qualifications
- 10+ years architecting enterprise omni-channel payment ecosystems (POS, E-Commerce, Multi-Banner).
- Deep hands-on experience with legacy payment systems (e.g., Verifone RTS/Fipay).
- Expertise in managed services, routing, mediation providers, and secure gateway integrations.
- Strong knowledge of PCI-DSS, PED security, tokenization, encryption, and cryptographic key behavior.
- Proven ability to interpret payment transaction logs and perform forensic event analysis.
- High EQ and collaborative mindset—must work well within a cohesive team.
