Reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer, the Manager, Business Development guides revenue opportunities of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) in pursuit of its strategic direction. This role requires strong cross-functional collaboration and relationship-building to support projects that drive revenue across multiple lines of business, encompassing both strategic planning and tactical responsibilities.
The Manager, Business Development, plays a critical role in driving change, optimizing existing revenue-generating streams, and cultivating, and encouraging innovative revenue capabilities and business development opportunities. The Manager will drive every point in the business development process from developing a holistic strategy, ideation of saleable assets, outbound solicitation and sales, contract negotiation and review, servicing and fulfillment, and evaluation and reporting.

What You’ll Be Doing:
Business Development Strategy
- Develop an annual business development strategy to support the objectives of the CPA
- Identify and achieve revenue targets through various avenues outlined in more detail below:
- Sponsorship & Exhibitors
- Advertising
- Membership Recruitment & Conversion
- Event & Program Sales
- Innovation
- Develop strategies to engage prospective, current and potential partners
- Research relevant and trending business development strategies that could impact or bolster revenue for the CPA
- Manage the business development budget, including revenue and expenses for the business development strategy
- Develop and deliver regular reports and presentations regarding the business development activities of the CPA
- Regularly contribute to ideation, concepting and planning cross-functionally with multiple departments including but not limited to communications, membership and events
Sponsorship & Exhibitors
- Create, sell and fulfil all of CPA’s sponsorships and exhibits, including for CPA’s flagship event, Congress, held in Halifax May 29-30, 2026
- Develop and maintain: a) A sponsorship asset inventory including ongoing valuation/pricing of sponsorship assets, b) A sponsorship framework, c) Sponsorship sales funnel, d) A prospect list
- Solicit, develop and maintain ongoing relationships with current, prospect, and lapsed sponsors
- Lead outbound solicitation effort including cold outreach, as required
- Identify ongoing projects, events and campaigns internally and how to leverage those initiatives for sponsorship revenue
- Create and present sponsorship packages and presentations to prospects
- Negotiate and execute sponsorship contracts including fulfillment and servicing for CPA corporate partners
- Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to ensure sponsorship and exhibitor event-related communications are appropriately distributed on a timely basis
- Evaluate sponsorships and prepare regular sponsorship reports for CPA
- Sponsorship portfolio includes assets such as: Congress, member engagement campaigns, business solutions partners, etc.
Advertising
- Develop and maintain a CPA rate card for advertising assets which include, but are not limited to: a) Career Centre portal, b) Physiotherapy Journal academic publication, c) Association emails , d) Event listings , e) Ad hoc website/campaign-based advertisements
- Develop an asset inventory and calendar including standard procedures for selling and executing advertisements in a consistent way for partners
- Collaborate with internal teams on the development of a procedure to ensue efficiency when executing purchased ads across CPA communication channels
- Sell advertising including outbound calls, building relationships with advertising brokers, and managing relationship directly with advertisers
- Fulfill and service all advertising partners
- Track relevant metrics on advertising platforms
- Regular reporting to partners on the relevant data with respect to their advertisements
Membership Recruitment & Conversion
- Develop and implement member recruitment strategies, managing marketing and outreach campaigns, and analyzing data to improve member acquisition
- Support the development of business intelligence and data models for better understanding and decision-making
- Evaluate existing products and offerings for the membership
- Create new and attractive products and perks for the membership
- In collaboration with Marketing and Communications, share and highlight the value of our current and future member benefits to the membership
- Support CPA’s executive leadership team in developing and executing strategic projects that will lead to recruitment and conversion of members, including:
- Establishing a group sales strategy
- Crafting a strategy to convert students to new grad members
- Member benefit package specifically for private practice clinicians and owners
Event & Program Sales
- Develop and implement sales strategies to achieve sales objectives in the following existing and net new areas:
- Congress – attendee registration
- Education – fee-for-service education via CPA
- Affinity Programs – member discounts in insurance, education via third-party, business solutions, etc.
Innovation
- Conduct continuous market research, competitive analysis, and trend forecasting to identify emerging market needs, potential new ventures, and areas for strategic investment, including, but not limited to grant funding for CPA and partner special projects
- Engage and equip all departments within the CPA to drive revenue and growth throughout the organization by supporting the creation of a culture of revenue optimization and growth
- Identify, build, and monitor operational processes that support cross-departmental communication and collaboration
Other tasks and duties as assigned.
