The Opportunity
Caldera + Lab is seeking a Senior Director or VP of Human Resources to lead and build the people function. This is a highly autonomous role for a senior HR leader who has built an HR department from the ground up and guided organizations through periods of meaningful growth.
Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, this role is ideal for someone who operates independently, owns outcomes end to end, and brings structure, systems, and rigor to a growing company. The current team size is approximately 20 employees, with plans to grow headcount by 50%+ over the next 2–3 years.
This is a fully remote role and requires experience managing human resources in a remote-first environment, with a strong understanding of the different approaches needed to support performance, engagement, and accountability outside of a traditional office.
What You’ll Do
Talent Acquisition, Interviewing & Team Scaling
• Own and lead the end-to-end hiring strategy as the company scales
• Design and continuously improve structured interviewing, screening, and evaluation processes
• Personally oversee and manage candidate screening, interviews, and hiring for key roles
• Build scalable recruiting frameworks, scorecards, and hiring manager training
• Establish onboarding processes that set new hires up for success in a remote-first environment
Strategic Leadership & Culture
• Help professionalize the organization as it scales into its next phase of growth
• Own and evolve company culture, values, and engagement initiatives
• Plan and manage company all-hands meetings and internal communications
• Manage company perks and employee experience programs
Performance Management & Compensation
• Own and continuously improve the performance review process, including bi-annual and annual reviews
• Lead compensation planning, adjustments, and promotion cycles
• Develop and maintain compensation frameworks, leveling, and pay bands
Payroll, Benefits & HR Operations
• Own payroll administration, including multi-state payroll setup and compliance
• Manage payroll tax filings and open payroll accounts in new states as needed
• Oversee benefits administration, including health plans and the company 401(k)
• Maintain and update employee handbooks, policies, and procedures
• Manage relationships with payroll providers, benefits brokers, and HR vendors
Compliance, Risk & Insurance
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
• Oversee corporate insurance programs, including workers’ compensation and EPLI
• Manage employee relations matters with professionalism and discretion
• Stay current on evolving employment regulations and best practices
Systems & Process Ownership
• Own HRIS and people systems; experience with Rippling is strongly preferred
• Implement and improve HR processes, documentation, and reporting
• Ensure data accuracy, confidentiality, and operational efficiency
What We’re Looking For
Required Experience
• 10+ years of progressive HR leadership experience
• Proven experience building an HR department from scratch at a startup or high-growth company
• Demonstrated success scaling teams through significant multi-year growth
• Extensive experience owning interviewing, screening, and hiring processes end to end
• Experience managing human resources in a remote-first environment
• Strong operational expertise across payroll, benefits, compliance, performance management, and compensation
• Experience managing multi-state employment and payroll compliance
• Ability to operate independently with minimal direction and high ownership
Preferred Experience
• Experience in CPG, e-commerce, or software
• Experience using Rippling or a similar modern HRIS platform
• Experience leading organizations through the transition from early-stage startup to a more structured, professionalized environment
Compensation & Benefits
• Base salary range: $175,000 – $210,000, target bonus equal to 10% of salary
