About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Software Engineer specializing in Trusted Computing and Cryptography to join our Security team at OpenAI. This role is pivotal in building and securing our critical computing infrastructure, focusing on deploying high-performance cryptography at scale, managing cryptographic keys securely, and leveraging trusted hardware enclaves for enhanced security. As part of this team, you will collaborate closely with researchers, engineers, and security experts to integrate advanced cryptographic techniques into our production and research systems. Your work will involve designing, implementing, and maintaining secure key management systems, developing foundational cryptographic libraries, and deploying security primitives such as TPM2, Secure Boot, Nitro Enclaves, and confidential computing platforms. This position offers the flexibility of remote work within the US, with occasional travel to our San Francisco headquarters or other offices. We operate on a hybrid model, requiring three days in the office per week, and provide relocation assistance for new hires.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience as a software engineer working on large-scale, production systems
  • Proficiency in programming with Python and Rust; experience with C/C++ is a plus
  • Strong understanding of cryptographic systems and their deployment at scale
  • Hands-on experience with cryptographic key management and security primitives such as TPM2, Secure Boot, secure enclaves, and confidential computing platforms
  • Knowledge of operating system security measures, including remote attestation, TPM measurement, and host integrity verification
  • Experience architecting, observing, and debugging distributed systems in production environments
  • Ability to own problems end-to-end and quickly learn new skills or technologies as needed
  • Experience in rebuilding or refactoring systems to accommodate rapid growth and scale
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, self-directed attitude
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with a humble attitude and eagerness to support team success

Responsibilities

  • Develop high-performance, secure cryptographic code in Rust and Python to support scalable cryptographic operations
  • Collaborate with research and engineering teams to integrate advanced cryptographic techniques into production systems
  • Design, implement, and maintain secure key management systems, including offline backups and multi-party computation
  • Deploy and manage security primitives such as TPM2, Secure Boot, Nitro Enclaves, and other confidential computing technologies
  • Research and develop operating system-level security measures, including remote attestation and runtime TPM measurement
  • Build foundational libraries to support cryptographic operations, embedding security best practices into infrastructure
  • Identify and troubleshoot security vulnerabilities within distributed systems and infrastructure
  • Stay updated with emerging security threats and cryptographic advancements to ensure system resilience
  • Participate in security reviews, testing, and documentation to uphold OpenAI’s security standards

Benefits

  • Competitive salary ranging from $308,000 to $465,000, with additional equity offers
  • Flexible remote work options within the US, with occasional travel to headquarters or other offices
  • Hybrid work model with three days in the office per week
  • Relocation assistance for eligible candidates
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans
  • Generous paid time off and leave policies
  • Opportunities for professional development and continuous learning
  • Inclusive and diverse work environment that values different perspectives
