Job Description
Ruby on Rails Software Engineer (Fully remote -UK)
£55K - £75K
Imagine joining a small, highly skilled engineering team where Ruby on Rails isn’t the legacy system—it’s the core of the craft. A place where developers with ~10 years’ experience in Rails and modern front‑end tooling work on impactful, high‑usage, production systems across government, health, social good, finance, and fast‑growth tech.
This is an opportunity to build software that millions of people use, while working in an environment designed for autonomy, mastery, and modern engineering excellence.
Recent projects include:
- Rebuilding high‑traffic public services on Rails
- Upgrading complex platforms to the latest Rails releases
- Taking over and stabilising large‑scale e‑commerce Rails deployments
- Building secure authentication features (2FA), personalization APIs, and scalable back‑end systems
What You'll be doing:
- Build and maintain high‑quality Ruby on Rails applications and occasionally work with other languages and frameworks when needed.
- Use AI tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Droid, etc.) to accelerate high-quality delivery — not replace engineering judgment.
- Help shape architecture, technical decisions, and system design.
- Troubleshoot issues, improve performance, and suggest better ways of doing things.
- Turn wireframes, mock-ups, and user stories into well‑designed, user‑focused features.
- Take part in code reviews and contribute to a thoughtful, high‑standards engineering culture.
- Own features end‑to‑end—from idea to deployment and monitoring.
Requirements:
- Strong Ruby on Rails experience, ideally across multiple production applications.
- Comfortable working in existing codebases and shipping within real-world constraints.
- Experience with SQL (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and some exposure to NoSQL stores.
- Sound understanding of version control, CI/CD, testing, and deployment pipelines.
- Skilled in using and prompting LLM’s (we want developers who leverage AI, not fall back on it)
Benefits:
- Fully remote working anywhere in the UK
- Flexible working hours
- 26 days annual leave + BH
- Private medical
- Training and conference allowance
