This role is ideal for candidates who enjoy working close to the equipment, collaborating with engineers and operators, and developing deep technical expertise in utility-scale systems. As part of the Utilities & Infrastructure (UI) organization, you'll support day-to-day system reliability, preventive maintenance, and capital improvement projects for LANL's energy systems, splitting your time between field activities and technical work, providing a well-rounded, hands-on career path. In this role you will gain exposure to large steam boilers, condensate return systems, and a 20+ MW combustion turbine generator, while contributing directly to the infrastructure that powers nationally important research.

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

  • Maintain system documentation to support safe operations and future upgrades
  • Assist with developing drawings and specifications for system repairs and upgrades
  • Review vendor submittals and engineering documents with oversight
  • Participate in construction inspections, site visits, and commissioning activities
  • Support pressure safety compliance, hazard evaluations, and event investigations
  • This role provides hands-on exposure, structured learning, and a clear development path

Engineering Technologist 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)

In addition to the above, you will:

  • Lead condition assessments and system evaluations
  • Independently review and verify technical designs and system changes
  • Drive process improvements and instrumentation/control upgrades
  • Serve as a technical mentor to junior technologists
