Job Description
About the Opportunity:
The organization is focused on improving internet user experience and safeguarding digital content by building tools that prevent shipping broken pixels. The backend engineer role supports the Platform API that powers the web app, CLI, internal services, and frontend add-ons. This API enables UI testing and review workflows to keep frontends regression-free. The platform uses NodeJS, Typescript, Express, Apollo GraphQL, and MongoDB. Recent team achievements include launching accessibility regression testing, scaling billing infrastructure, and optimizing database and background processes. This fully remote role is for candidates located in the mainland US or Canada.
Responsibilities:
• Build and maintain scalable, reliable backend systems for the product.
• Own projects from conception to completion with clear work breakdown and momentum.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure feature continuity and deliver developer-friendly solutions.
• Identify and implement optimizations, refactoring, and modernization of existing systems.
• Participate in team support rotation during business hours.
• Monitor emerging trends in frontend architecture and developer tools to enhance the platform.
Requirements:
• 5 or more years of backend engineering experience building scalable, resilient APIs using modern JS/TS and test-driven development.
• Self-directed problem solver able to scope work, communicate progress, flag blockers early, and make independent trade-offs aligned with stakeholders.
• Willingness to challenge ideas constructively and demonstrate a growth mindset.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, providing concise, context-rich updates in a distributed asynchronous environment.
• Ability to stay focused and accountable, delivering consistent progress despite challenges.
• Strong interest in developer experience and understanding frontend team pain points.
We’d be excited if you:
• Recently stepped into a senior role or are an early-career engineer ready to advance.
• Have experience with Storybook or the platform.
• Have built and maintained public APIs, especially with GraphQL.
• Have experience in other backend frameworks (Rails, Phoenix, FastAPI, etc.) besides Node JS/TS.
• Have worked effectively in a distributed, remote-first team.
• Bring insights from non-traditional paths into software beyond engineering.
Compensation:
• Salary range US$145K to US$184K plus equity.
