About The Role
The Samsara AI team is at the forefront of building end-to-end AI solutions that serve our customers and develop core machine learning (ML) infrastructure for the company. As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you will work with petabyte-scale sensor, diagnostic, video, and textual data to address critical challenges faced by our Physical Operations clients globally. Your role involves collaborating closely with ML engineers, scientists, full-stack developers, and firmware engineers to design, develop, and optimize key product features and services. This position is remote, open to candidates residing within the United States, with occasional travel of up to 5%. Please note that relocation assistance is not provided for this role.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience as a Machine Learning Engineer
- Profound expertise in optimizing ML models and systems for edge computing constraints
- Proficiency with frameworks such as Spark, Ray, or similar
- Strong programming skills in Python or equivalent languages
- Experience with C++ or Rust programming languages
- Deep understanding of the iterative machine learning product development process
- Experience in developing and deploying production-grade code at large scale
- Ability to translate ambiguous customer and business needs into clear problem definitions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience mentoring and coaching ML engineers

Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of critical AI product initiatives on edge devices
- Develop both tactical AI solutions and strategic, long-term research projects
- Handle petabyte-scale data from diverse sources including text, diagnostics, sensor streams, video, and location data
- Collaborate across business units to prototype new AI experiences and optimize ML model performance on edge hardware
- Stay current with industry and academic research, integrating innovative technologies that align with Samsara’s objectives
- Promote and exemplify Samsara’s cultural principles such as customer success, long-term building, growth mindset, inclusion, and teamwork
- Mentor junior team members and foster a collaborative engineering environment
