Job Description

About The Role

Autopoiesis Sciences is an applied AI lab based in San Francisco, California on a mission to accelerate scientific discovery across every discipline. We're building AI systems from first principles, developing novel architectures that combine calibrated confidence estimation with reinforcement learning from experimental outcomes. Our approach learns optimal research strategies directly from real-world scientific practice, training on experimental results, publication impact, and validated discoveries rather than static knowledge alone. By closing the loop between AI hypothesis generation and experimental validation, we're creating systems that know what they don't know and improve through ground truth from nature itself. Backed by Informed Ventures, Alpaca VC, Cross Atlantic Angels, Adam Grosser, Ally Warson, Mike Mahlkow, Hiro Mizushima, and others, we're preparing to release our systems to the research community. We invite you to join us in building the future of scientific intelligence.

Location

Autopoiesis Sciences is headquartered in San Francisco, with a growing engineering team in Toronto. This is a fully remote position for candidates based in the Greater Toronto Area.

Who We're Looking For

The breakthroughs that actually change the world come from people who refuse to accept "impossible" as an answer. We want individuals who approach their work with intellectual humility. People who know that despite all the progress in frontend engineering, we're still scratching the surface of what's possible. You should be comfortable admitting what you don't know, but absolutely relentless about figuring it out. The kind of person who, when faced with a problem everyone says can't be solved, treats that as the starting point rather than the conclusion.

This isn't a role for people who need their hands held or who expect clear answers to ambiguous problems. Scientific superintelligence won't be built by following established playbooks. It requires questioning assumptions, rebuilding from first principles when necessary, and maintaining conviction even when the path forward is unclear. We need people who derive energy from hard problems and won't settle for "good enough" when breakthrough solutions are possible.

If you're someone who sees the current state of user interfaces for AI systems and thinks "we can do better," who believes the most important work is still ahead of us, and who's willing to put in whatever it takes to get there, we want to hear from you.

Areas of Focus

  • High-performance, responsive interfaces for complex AI interactions
  • Real-time data visualization and scientific workflow presentation
  • Cross-platform user experiences that feel native and intuitive
  • Component architecture for rapidly evolving product requirements
  • Accessibility and internationalization at scale
  • Performance optimization for data-intensive applications
  • Design system development and implementation

About the Role

Autopoiesis Sciences is seeking exceptional Frontend Engineers to help build the interfaces through which researchers will interact with our AI systems. As a Frontend Engineer, you will craft the experiences that translate complex scientific AI capabilities into intuitive, powerful tools for the research community. You'll build interfaces that surface AI-generated hypotheses, visualize experimental results, and enable researchers to collaborate with our systems in ways that amplify human scientific intuition.

While our AI systems do the heavy lifting of scientific reasoning, the interface is where discovery becomes tangible. You'll work on products that need to communicate uncertainty, present multi-dimensional data, and support workflows that don't yet exist in any established playbook. This role offers the opportunity to define what human-AI collaboration looks like in scientific research, building experiences that will be used by researchers pushing the boundaries of their fields.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement performant, accessible user interfaces using modern React and TypeScript
  • Build cross-platform experiences that maintain consistency and quality across devices and contexts
  • Develop component libraries and design systems that scale with rapidly evolving product requirements
  • Create data visualization solutions for complex scientific information, including uncertainty quantification and multi-dimensional results
  • Optimize application performance for real-time AI interactions and large dataset rendering
  • Collaborate closely with designers to translate research workflows into intuitive user experience
  • Work with ML engineers to design frontend architectures that integrate seamlessly with AI backend systems
  • Implement robust state management patterns for complex, asynchronous AI-driven workflows
  • Build testing infrastructure and maintain high code quality standards across the frontend codebase
  • Contribute to technical decisions around tooling, architecture, and development practices

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 2-3 years of experience in frontend engineering (internships, research positions, or industry experience)
  • Strong programming skills in TypeScript and deep experience with React
  • Demonstrated expertise in modern frontend architecture patterns, state management, and component design
  • Experience building responsive, cross-platform applications that perform well across different environments
  • Solid understanding of web performance optimization, including rendering strategies, bundle optimization, and runtime performance
  • Strong grasp of accessibility standards and best practices for inclusive design
  • Proven ability to translate complex requirements into clean, maintainable code
  • Experience with modern build tools, testing frameworks, and CI/CD practices
  • Bonus: Experience with data visualization libraries (D3, Visx, etc.), scientific or research-oriented applications, real-time collaborative interfaces, native mobile development, or design system creation

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive compensation, equity, and benefits
  • Collaborate in building a thoughtful, mission-driven team culture focused on scientific discovery
  • Frequent team events, dinners, off-sites, and gatherings
  • Compensation packages are highly variable based on experience, expertise, and contribution potential
