HX5 is currently seeking a Mechanical Test Engineer to join our team in Brook Park, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will provide engineering test support for technology development of advanced dynamic energy conversion concepts. The individual will support the design, development, troubleshooting, and testing of test stations for dynamic energy conversion technology in support of radioisotope power systems development. This work includes testing of Stirling convertors. The individual will identify methodologies, instrumentation, and supporting test equipment as needed, as well as support the set- up and design of test hardware, data systems, and related support equipment and evaluate and document test results. The individual will support Stirling convertor system testing in the Stirling Research Lab, the Structural Dynamics Lab, the EMI lab, and thermal/vacuum test facilities.
Required Skills:
- Understanding of mechanical components and assemblies, especially related to Stirling convertors.
- Ability to design, assemble, and verify mechanical test rigs and fixtures.
- Familiarity with sensors and data acquisition systems.
- Skills in assembly and troubleshooting mechanical hardware.
- Knowledge of heat transfer principles and thermal management for test environments.
- Awareness of lab safety protocols and handling of mechanical systems under operational conditions.
- Experience with CAD tools for fixture design.
- Familiarity with vibration and vacuum system testing.
- Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to create detailed test procedures, test plans, setup diagrams, and reports.

- Experience operating and preparing test setups for thermal energy conversion engines.
- Familiarity with thermal to electric systems is a plus.
- Python experience is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5 to 10 years of experience; at least 8 years of experience is preferred.
- Master’s degree with 3 to 6 years of experience.
- Ph.D. with 0 to 3 years of experience.
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
- Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
