Job Description

Fraud Risk Manager – Analytics, AI & Strategy

NYC | 80% Onsite

Up to $215k

Fraud isn’t just a numbers game anymore — it’s a battle against AI-enabled, automated attacks that adapt faster than traditional controls can. Nelo is looking for a Fraud Risk Manager who thinks like a strategist, acts like an analyst, and builds systems like a software engineer.

You’ll lead the charge in protecting a fast-growing, profitable consumer lending fintech, using data, analytics, and AI-powered tools to prevent catastrophic fraud while keeping the customer experience seamless. This isn’t a reactive role — it’s proactive, experimental, and highly autonomous.

Why this role matters

You will be the first line of defense and the architect of Nelo’s fraud strategy, with a mandate to:

  • Map the landscape: Within 3 weeks, produce an independent fraud risk assessment highlighting vulnerabilities, hidden risks, and opportunities for systemic improvements.
  • Experiment and optimize: Within 6 weeks, launch an experiment that reduces first-payment defaults with minimal impact on approvals.
  • Cap catastrophic risk: Within 4 months, design and implement controls that dramatically reduce the risk of large-scale acquisition or transaction fraud.
  • Professionalize fraud ops with AI: Within 7 months, build a repeatable fraud intelligence system combining human review, automated workflows, and AI agents to detect, escalate, and prevent fraud in real time.

Who thrives here

You’ll excel if you:

  • Have a background in consumer lending fraud analytics, ideally LATAM-focused, with experience in first-payment default, acquisition fraud, or programmatic attacks
  • Are fluent in SQL and data science, capable of building robust fraud models and conducting independent analyses
  • Are interested in designing and operationalizing AI tools, agents, or workflows (Claude, LangChain, or other automation frameworks) to scale intelligence without replacing analytical rigor
  • Combine paranoia with pragmatism — you worry about unseen threats, but you know how to act fast even without perfect infrastructure
  • Communicate effectively with founders, analytics teams, and operations to translate insights into action
  • Bring creativity and experimentation to fraud prevention, testing ideas quickly and iteratively

Why join Nelo

You’ll join a high-growth fintech that’s:

  • Profitable and scaling rapidly (~$70M ARR, double-digit monthly growth)
  • Led by founders who value experimentation, analytical rigor, and high-velocity decision-making
  • Backed by top-tier investors and fully capitalized with both equity and debt
  • Focused on building a data-driven, AI-augmented fraud function where your strategic impact is immediate and measurable

Compensation

  • NYC: $165K–$215K base + equity
  • Full medical/dental/vision, parental leave, relocation support
  • Performance-based bonus, unlimited PTO (team averages 3–4 weeks)
