Job Description
Our client is seeking an accomplished interim (3 months) Director of HR, Payroll & Compliance to lead and stabilize core people operations through an organizational transition period. This is a hands-on, execution-focused leadership opportunity to make a significant operational impact, reporting directly to the President. Responsibilities:
- Stabilize and structure HR, payroll, and employee relations operations
- Lead and coach an existing HR team, providing both strategic direction and hands-on execution
- Standardize HR and payroll processes, implement controls, and optimize ADP Workforce Now (WFN)
- Ensure accurate, compliant weekly payroll across all functions
- Document and institutionalize workflows for long-term sustainability
- Lead weekly payroll operations, ensuring accuracy and compliance in partnership with payroll and HR team members
- Oversee onboarding, employee data management, job changes, terminations, and related HR transactions
- Act as the point of escalation for complex HR, payroll, and compliance issues
- Create, document, and train the team on standardized HR and payroll operating procedures
- Set team priorities, allocate work, clarify roles, and build accountability for consistent execution
- Prepare documentation and ensure a seamless transition and handoff to future HR leadership

- Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, Accounting, or related field required
- SPHR or SHRM-SCP strongly preferred (PHR or SHRM-CP with deep payroll/compliance expertise considered)
- 10+ years' progressive, hands-on HR and payroll experience (including recent leadership roles)
- Proven leadership through HR/payroll transformations or turnaround assignments
- Strong, practical experience with ADP Workforce Now (configuration and process enhancements)
- Advanced knowledge of weekly/multi-state payroll, FMLA/ADA, employee relations, and compliance
- Demonstrated ability to execute as a working leader in remote environments
