Job Description

Our client is a manufacturing/distribution organization currently undergoing a major operational transformation, including the relocation of their headquarters and core functions to the Portland/Vancouver Metro area. As part of this transition, the organization is seeking a senior-level Payroll Leader to own and guide the migration, stabilization, and long-term success of the payroll function.

This is a highly visible, hands-on role ideal for a seasoned payroll management professional who has experience leading payroll transformations, building processes from the ground up, and operating as both a strategic advisor and an operational leader.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end payroll transition as part of the broader HQ relocation and “lift-and-shift” initiative
  • Serve as the local payroll subject-matter expert, owning payroll operations during and after the transition
  • Build, document, and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for payroll processes, ensuring scalability, compliance, and operational excellence
  • Advise and consult leadership on best practices related to payroll structure, governance, controls, and process design
  • Act as a strong people and process leader—jumping in as needed to support day-to-day payroll activities while the function is being established
  • Collaborate closely with Finance, HR, and external partners to ensure seamless execution and alignment
  • Help shape the payroll function long-term, laying the foundation for a sustainable and well-governed operation in the new location

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Proven experience in payroll leadership (Manager, Director, or VP-level), with deep hands-on payroll knowledge
  • Demonstrated success building or transforming payroll operations, including process design and SOP development
  • Experience supporting organizational change, relocations, system transitions, or large-scale payroll projects strongly preferred
  • Comfortable operating in a consultative, advisory capacity while remaining highly execution-focused
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence, guide, and support cross-functional teams
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and follow-through
  • Exposure to Paycom is a plus, but not must-have
  • Local to the Portland/Vancouver area, with the ability to be onsite and embedded with the team

Culture & Environment

Culture fit is critically important to this organization. The ideal candidate will be collaborative, grounded, adaptable, and excited to help build something new. This role will sit within a beautiful office in the Portland/Vancouver Metro area, offering an outstanding work environment, modern amenities, and a strong sense of momentum and investment in people.
