About The Role

We are seeking highly skilled and experienced Software Engineers to join our Builds team within the Developer Platform organization. The Builds team is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the build infrastructure that supports all engineers and researchers at Anthropic. This includes managing hermetic build environments, container image pipelines, remote build execution, build caching, and dependency management across our extensive monorepo. Your work will directly influence the velocity, efficiency, and reliability of our research and product development efforts.

As Anthropic scales its engineering operations, research initiatives, and code contributions from both humans and AI agents, robust build infrastructure becomes critical. We are developing next-generation systems that support scalable remote build execution, content-addressable storage, incremental builds, and hermetic environments. These systems are designed to reduce build times and improve reproducibility, even as our codebase grows significantly. The complexity of our monorepo, which includes Python, Rust, and Go, and targets multiple hardware accelerators such as TPUs, Trainium, and GPUs, presents unique challenges that require innovative solutions. If you have experience building or operating large-scale, hermetic build systems in a large monorepo environment and are passionate about designing foundational systems that empower thousands of engineers, this role is an excellent fit.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
• 10+ years of industry experience building and maintaining large-scale build systems and infrastructure
• Deep expertise with hermetic, reproducible build systems such as Bazel, Buck, Nix, or similar tools
• Strong understanding of build caching strategies, remote execution, and content-addressable storage

• Experience with containerized build environments and image build pipelines
• Proficiency in at least one programming language among Python, Rust, or Go

Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable, hermetic build infrastructure supporting remote build execution and content-addressable storage systems
• Maintain and evolve Nix-based build environments and package management systems, ensuring compatibility and currency of nixpkgs and language runtimes
• Implement fine-grained dependency management across the monorepo to enable incremental builds and eliminate unnecessary rebuilds

• Optimize container image build times through architectural improvements, layer caching, and storage strategies
