POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Technology serves as AOTA’s technology leader, responsible for executing and institutionalizing a pre-existing IT roadmap that aligns organizational priorities and long-term goals. This role combines strategic leadership with hands-on oversight to optimize technology systems, improve operational efficiency, enhance member and staff experiences, and ensure cybersecurity and compliance.

The Director leads a high-performing IT team, oversees technology operations, manages vendor relationships, and drives adoption of centralized IT solutions across departments. This role is embedded across the organization, influencing processes and initiatives to ensure technology enables, rather than hinders, organizational goals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT (Remote):
This position is fully remote with hybrid options in the Bethesda, MD Headquarters.
POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Strategic Leadership
- Execute and institutionalize AOTA’s IT roadmap, prioritizing initiatives and driving cross-department adoption.
- Provide technically sound guidance and executive recommendations to the CFAO on technology strategy, vendor evaluation, and ROI assessment.
- Maintain a collaborative relationship with business units to support change management, process improvements, and strategic transformation.
- Build a culture of trust, transparency, and customer-service focus within the IT function.
- Report on IT initiatives and outcomes to leadership, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Leverage appropriate technical tools and knowledge-sharing practices to support cross-departmental training and business continuity.
- Establish and maintain IT governance, policies, and standards, ensuring scalability and operational excellence.
Technology Operations and Infrastructure
- Oversee and support staff and vendors responsible for operational support of technology tools and processes, including key platforms such as AMS, Salesforce, productivity, and collaboration tools.
- Plan, lead, and execute critical technical initiatives, including system downgrades, cloud migration, platform optimizations, and ongoing product implementations and evolutions.
- Serve as a technology expert, providing insight and best practices across the organization for current and future initiatives.
- Maintain and adapt system and platform documentation to support operational continuity, transparency, and knowledge retention.
- Ensure users across the organization have appropriate, timely support and advisory services by overseeing help desk operations, defining service standards, and ensuring accountability for resolution and user satisfaction.
- Maintain oversight of a comprehensive security framework, including monitoring, reporting, regulatory compliance, and incident response planning and execution.
- Oversee the seamless operation and maintenance of IT systems, ensuring security, reliability, and compliance with data privacy regulations and best practices.
- Manage relationships with third-party vendors and service providers to ensure technology services align with strategic objectives and deliver value.
- Design and implement a robust cybersecurity framework to protect AOTA from evolving threats and proactively reduce risk.

Team Leadership and Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing IT team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Define service standards, escalation paths, and performance metrics for the IT team.
- Champion a customer-service mindset within the IT function and instill accountability and ownership among team members.
Project and Financial Management
- Lead the formulation, planning, and execution of all IS/IT projects, including defining project objectives, system requirements, scope, timelines, and resource needs to ensure alignment with organizational priorities.
- Provide planning consultation and advisory services to departments on system development initiatives, ensuring solutions are scalable, integrated, and aligned with the IT roadmap.
- Ensure on-time, on-budget delivery of technology projects through disciplined project management, change management, and cross-departmental adoption.
- Develop and manage the IT operating budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources to drive organizational priorities.
Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive disaster recovery plan to ensure protection of critical data and continuity of operations during emergencies.
- Proactively safeguard AOTA’s data assets through risk management, compliance initiatives, and continuous monitoring.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- 8+ years of progressive IT leadership experience, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Proven success leading technology transformations, managing complex IT systems, and implementing strategic IT roadmaps.
- Demonstrated ability to lead IT teams and foster a collaborative, high-performance culture.
- Nonprofit association or membership organization experience highly preferred.
- Familiarity with ITIL, PMP, or cybersecurity certifications is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Extensive experience leading IT projects and system implementations, with a track record of delivering on-time and on-budget outcomes.
- Strong project management and change management skills, driving adoption across decentralized teams.
- Deep understanding of IT domains, emerging technology trends, AI applications, cybersecurity, data analytics, and IT infrastructure management.
- Hands-on experience with AMS and Salesforce, with the ability to manage multiple systems, implement security frameworks (e.g., MFA), and oversee IT operations.
- Strong vendor and contract management experience, including ROI evaluation and strategic partnerships.
- Exceptional communication, presentation, and influencing skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and engage at all organizational levels.
- Demonstrated customer-service focus, problem-solving orientation, collaboration, and ability to instill these behaviors within teams.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to make data-driven decisions in high-pressure situations.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
