Senior Data Engineer

Salary: £57,000 – £64,000 per annum

Location: Leeds (Hybrid / UK-based with travel)

Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Overview

Our client is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join their digital consultancy practice. This role sits within multidisciplinary delivery teams responsible for building, supporting, and maintaining user-centred digital solutions that enable organisations to make evidence-based decisions and extract value from complex data estates.

This position is well suited to an experienced data engineer who is looking to continue growing at Senior level, with clear scope for progression within the role as capability and impact increase.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a subject matter expert within delivery teams, leading the design and implementation of data solutions aligned to business requirements.
  • Support architects in realising data system designs, including data meshes, data warehouses, and event-based architectures.
  • Design and implement robust data flows connecting operational systems with analytics and business intelligence platforms.
  • Re-engineer, develop, and optimise data pipelines and code to ensure performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Build strong working relationships with team members, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Share best practice across the engineering community to maintain high technical standards.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and mentoring of engineers and consultants.
  • Contribute to internal and external thought leadership through blogs, workshops, seminars, or community events.

Requirements

  • Strong expertise in Python for data engineering and pipeline development.
  • Proven experience working with Snowflake, dbt, AWS, and Terraform.
  • Experience with additional languages such as R, Bash, Java/.NET, or PowerShell is advantageous.
  • Broad understanding of cloud architectures, networking, and distributed computing systems.
  • Experience designing data systems including data lakes, data meshes, and data warehouses.
  • Experience working with a variety of data sources, including SQL, NoSQL, and graph databases.
  • Proven delivery experience across data platforms such as Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks, Elastic, or Splunk.
  • Strong experience with data parsing, including regular expressions and JSON processing.
  • Experience in log processing and ingestion technologies (e.g. Splunk, Elastic, Apache NiFi, or similar).
  • Experience producing dashboards and delivering actionable insights.
  • Good security awareness, including understanding of best practices such as OAuth, MFA, and TLS.
  • Experience processing large-scale datasets.
  • Solid understanding of data modelling and normalisation principles.
  • Ability to estimate delivery timescales, system latencies, and cost considerations.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams, with strong collaboration and presentation skills.
