Responsiblities

Performs duties as a Facility System Engineer (Engineer II) at the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experimentation (PULSE), an underground nuclear facility located in the forward areas at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Facility System Engineers are instrumental in ensuring the PULSE is capable of executing national-level experiment that ensure the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile remains safe, secure, and effective. This position will initially support the design, construction, turnover, and commissioning of two new testbeds at PULSE, then transition into the PULSE Facility Engineering group as the original Subject Matter Expert/Cognizant System Engineer for one or more systems (cranes/load handling, chilled water/HVAC, refuge station, fire protection, electrical, or similar) developed as part of the new testbeds.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the line item projects developing the new testbeds. Tasks will include, but not be limited to, development of System Design Descriptions, Functional Classification Documents, system maintenance requirements, operating procedures, acceptance test plans, and similar; compilation and review of turnover documentation; and participation in design and safety basis reviews and acceptance tests.
• Helps maintain overall cognizance of assigned facility systems, providing cognizant system engineering support for operations and maintenance, and technical support of line management safety responsibilities for ensuring continued system operational readiness.
• Validates physical configuration of assigned systems. Maintains and updates system documents for Configuration Management (CM). Understands the functions and performance criteria for assigned systems per the Safety Basis, and acts as the subject matter expert for assigned systems.
• Helps oversee the In-service Inspection and Technical Surveillance Requirement execution of assigned systems.
• Identifies and helps implement the technical requirements for maintaining systems, structures, and components.

• Performs assessments of assigned systems and reports system health status to management.
• Contributes to solutions of assignment-related problems and issues, using a well-defined set of technologies. Solutions use established basic standards, practices and procedures as well as technical knowledge to address problems and complete tasks. Solutions may require evaluation of standards and processes.
• Participates in developing field programs and designs using pre-determined principles and practices.
• Helps select and implements computer applications for their field.
• Assists in preparing or contributes to designs, strategies, reports and technical proposals.
• Performs design and technical analysis activities using prescribed codes and standards, computer software, and generally accepted best management practices.
• Performs frequent coordination of discipline information with other departments within the company and with outside vendors.

• Develops a working knowledge of codes and standards of other disciplines.
• Coordinates work within their discipline on moderately complex projects.
• Often serves as a member of work teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees
• Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor's degree in engineering
• Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB)
• Or Professional Engineer license
• Plus at least 2 years' relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
• Ability to interpret codes and standards within the discipline in which they were hired.
• Candidate will qualify as System Engineer, Cognizant System Engineer as defined in DOE Order 420.1C, "Facility Safety," Design Authority, Unreviewed Safety Question preparer, and to develop and process Commercial Grade Dedications.
• Demonstrated desire to learn and innovate.
• Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and procedures.
• Knowledge of hoists (bridge cranes or similar), refuge stations, fire protection systems, mechanical systems (chilled water, compressed air, or similar), electrical system, instrumentation and control, and/or electromechanical components.

• Should be self-motivated.
• Ideally, the applicant will have strong time-management skills. Be well organized, maintain safe work habits and have a broad range of technical interests and education.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write reports and technical documents.
• The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada).
• Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change).
• Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
• Must possess a valid driver's license.
  
  

MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Annual salary range for this position is: $83,075.20 - $124,612.80.

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
