About The Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Backend Engineer with over six years of expertise in designing and delivering high-performance, cloud-native backend services. As the first senior backend engineering hire in the United States, you will play a critical role in architecting and implementing scalable microservices that power our social care automation platform. Your responsibilities will include owning service design, ensuring security and compliance with HITRUST and HIPAA standards, and collaborating closely with product managers, DevOps, and front-end teams to translate complex healthcare workflows into reliable, event-driven architectures. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence technical strategy, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to a mission-driven organization dedicated to advancing social care through technology.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience in back-end engineering within high-traffic, cloud-hosted environments
• Proficiency in Java (Spring/Spring Boot) and/or Node.js; knowledge of TypeScript, Go, or Python is a plus
• Deep understanding of PostgreSQL and MongoDB performance tuning, replication, and backup strategies
• Hands-on experience deploying and managing services on AWS (ECS/EKS, Lambda, SQS/SNS, RDS) or GCP equivalents
• Proven track record of developing secure, compliant code in regulated domains such as healthcare or fintech
• Experience building high-volume, reliable transaction systems emphasizing scalability and availability
• Mastery of version control systems like Git, along with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, CodeBuild, etc.)
• Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate architectural decisions to executives and mentor distributed teams

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and refactor scalable microservices and data pipelines using Java, Node.js, or similar technologies
• Own API strategy, including REST endpoints, service contracts, and backward compatibility management
• Model relational and NoSQL schemas, optimize database performance, and guide data migration, backup, and high-availability strategies
• Deploy and operate cloud services on GCP or AWS, integrating CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CloudFormation), and automated ML/AI pipelines where applicable
• Embed security best practices aligned with HIPAA, HITRUST, and OWASP standards into all phases of development, including secret management and audit logging
• Benchmark system performance, tune runtime environments, and implement autoscaling, caching, and graceful degradation techniques
• Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers, review pull requests, and promote a DevSecOps and agile development culture
• Evaluate vendor solutions and lead proof-of-concept initiatives for build vs. buy decisions, including MSSPs and observability tools
• Collaborate with ISO and security teams to prepare architecture diagrams, runbooks, and security artifacts for HITRUST/SOC 2 audits
