Job Description

Infrastructure Engineer (Azure) – Fixed-Term (12–24 months)

Location: Remote (UK-based)

Salary: Up to c. £55,000 + pension + generous holiday

A public-sector organisation has just completed a major migration from a traditional data centre into a modern Azure environment. They’re looking for an Infrastructure Engineer with expertise in Azure to help maximise this new platform and ensure real value from their managed service provider.

This is a chance to work in an organisation that is ahead of many peers in its cloud journey, with a genuine opportunity to shape how Azure is run and optimised.

The role

You will be the in-house Azure subject matter expert, working alongside infrastructure, networks, security and M365 teams. Day to day, you will:

  • Act as the technical owner for the Azure environment
  • Work closely with the external managed service to:
  • Challenge and validate recommendations
  • Monitor consumption, costs and optimisation opportunities
  • Ensure the environment is secure, resilient and well-architected
  • Support and lead Azure-related projects and changes
  • Troubleshoot incidents and problems involving Azure services, networking, identity and security
  • Provide guidance to internal teams on designing and running workloads in Azure
  • Contribute to improving standards, patterns and documentation for Azure usage

The managed service handles much of the day-to-day operations, but you will need to understand the environment well enough to know what “good” looks like and when to push back.

Key skills & experience

  • 3–5+ years’ hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure in a production environment
  • Strong understanding of core Azure services, for example:
  • Compute (VMs, scale sets, App Services)
  • Networking (VNets, NSGs, firewalls, connectivity)
  • Storage and databases
  • Identity and access management (Azure AD / Entra ID, RBAC)
  • Experience working with or alongside a managed service provider
  • Good grasp of security and cost-optimisation principles in Azure
  • Ability to interpret what’s in the Azure portal and clearly explain it to non-specialists
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across infrastructure, networking and security
  • Azure certifications (e.g. AZ-104, AZ-305) are beneficial but not essential if you can demonstrate equivalent practical experience.

What’s on offer

  • Fixed-term contract for 12 months, likely extendable to 24 months
  • Fully remote working within the UK
  • Up to c. £55,000 salary (depending on experience)
  • Public-sector pension scheme and generous holiday entitlement
  • Opportunity to work on a modern, greenfield Azure estate and influence how it evolves

If you have solid Azure experience and want to own and shape a modern cloud environment without the intensity of the private sector, this could be a strong fit.
