Position Description:

The GIS Solutions Architect supports the IT organization of a local utility in Jackson, Michigan by designing, maintaining, and optimizing enterprise‑grade geospatial platforms and integrated business systems. This role serves as a technical leader and trusted advisor across engineering, operations, field services, and asset‑management teams—ensuring that GIS capabilities, spatial data, and connected applications operate reliably, securely, and strategically to advance utility operations and customer service.

Key Responsibilities:

• Enterprise GIS Architecture & IT Administration
• Architect, configure, and administer ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and supporting components in a highly available, secure environment.
• Define system standards, deployment patterns, and best practices for enterprise GIS infrastructure.
• Spatial Data Governance & Application Lifecycle Management
• Oversee enterprise geodatabases, utility asset datasets, and spatial data pipelines.
• Implement QA/QC frameworks, enforce governance policies, and maintain metadata standards.
• Skills: Systems Integration & Platform Interoperability
• Design and support integrations between GIS and OMS, CIS, EAM/CMMS, SCADA, mobile workforce platforms, and other enterprise systems.
• 5+ years of experience with the ArcGIS suite in an enterprise IT environment.

• 5+years experience managing and designing IT applications.
• Advanced proficiency with ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and enterprise geodatabases.
• Strong scripting and automation capabilities using Python, SQL, and FME.
• Experience supporting enterprise systems within structured IT frameworks (change management, security, governance).
• Leverage APIs, web services, and ETL tools to ensure seamless data exchange and operational continuity.
• Application, Mapping, & Solution Development
• Lead the development of web maps, dashboards, mobile data‑collection tools, and custom GIS applications.
• Partner with business units to translate operational needs into scalable, GIS‑enabled solutions.
• Automation, Scripting & Workflow Optimization
• Use Python, SQL, and FME to automate processes, enhance data quality, and streamline enterprise workflows.
• Develop repeatable automation frameworks that support system reliability and reduce manual effort.
• User Enablement, Support & Training
• Provide Tier 2/3 technical support for GIS platforms and integrated systems.
• Develop documentation, standards, and training materials for both technical and non‑technical users.
• Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Project Leadership
• Work with engineering, operations, and IT teams to define requirements, architect solutions, and deliver GIS capabilities that support utility operations.

• Participate in technology planning, system upgrades, and enterprise modernization initiatives.
• System Monitoring, Security & Maintenance
• Background in solution architecture, enterprise systems design, or IT infrastructure planning
• Monitor system performance, availability, and security posture.
• Manage updates, patches, service health, and lifecycle planning for GIS infrastructure.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to bridge technical and business perspectives.
• Experience with APIs, REST services, and system integration patterns.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in the utilities sector (electric, water, wastewater, or gas).
• Familiarity with Esri Utility Network or legacy Geometric Network models.
• Experience with mobile GIS tools such as Field Maps, Survey123, or Workforce.
• Knowledge of cloud or virtualized environments (Azure, AWS, VMware)

Education Required:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in computer science, engineering or related disciplines
