About the Role
The Software QA Engineer ensures the delivery of reliable, high-quality software that supports essential business and scientific goals. This role collaborates with software engineering, product management, and cross-functional teams to integrate quality practices throughout the development process. The position contributes hands-on testing expertise and promotes scalable, risk-based quality approaches within a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
Responsibilities
• Develop, execute, and maintain test plans, test cases, and strategies for complex software systems
• Perform functional, regression, exploratory, and integration testing across web, backend, and platform components
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to review requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria from a quality perspective
• Identify, document, prioritize, and track software defects through resolution with clear communication
• Participate in sprint planning, backlog grooming, and retrospectives to improve quality outcomes
• Support software releases by validating readiness and assessing risk
• Apply risk-based thinking to testing and contribute to root cause analysis and corrective actions
• Promote quality best practices and support the evolution of team standards, tools, and processes

• Communicate effectively and maintain accountability in a distributed team environment
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience
• 5+ years of software quality assurance or testing experience, preferably with LIMS and/or Salesforce
• Strong understanding of software development lifecycles and QA methodologies
• Hands-on experience designing and executing test cases and documenting results
• Experience with defect tracking and test management tools
• Familiarity with agile development and cross-functional collaboration
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
• Exposure to regulated environments such as GxP, GLP, GCP, CLIA, CAP, and data integrity frameworks
Nice to Have
• Experience with test automation frameworks or automated test suites
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and continuous testing practices
• Experience testing cloud-based, data-driven, or distributed systems
• Ability to identify gaps in quality processes and suggest improvements

Compensation
$88,000 — $112,000 USD annually. Salary range for San Diego candidates: $97,000 to $105,000. Salary range for South San Francisco candidates: $105,000 to $117,000. Salary range for remote US candidates: $88,000 to $97,500. Final salary depends on factors such as experience, skills, location, industry, and education. Role may be eligible for discretionary bonuses, incentives, and restricted stock units.
