Backend Engineer (Distributed Systems)

Referment is partnering with a fast-scaling technology company building high-performance systems that process millions of real-world transactions daily. Their platform operates at significant scale across cloud and GPU-backed infrastructure, with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and efficiency.

This is a backend engineering role focused on building and optimising distributed systems, not machine learning.

What you will be doing:

• Designing and building Python APIs that handle high concurrency and large-scale ingestion
• Scaling backend systems across AWS infrastructure, ensuring reliability under load
• Measuring API performance and identifying bottlenecks across services
• Implementing and improving logging, monitoring, and distributed tracing

• Working on data pre-processing and post-processing pipelines within distributed workflows
• Supporting and optimising image processing pipelines, including format handling and metadata workflows
• Building internal tools and integrations that support core platform operations
  
  

What We Are Looking For

• 3+ years of backend development experience with Python
• Strong experience designing systems that handle concurrent workloads at scale
• Hands-on experience with AWS and cloud-based infrastructure
• Proven ability to measure, analyse, and improve system and API performance
• Experience with Docker, CI/CD, and containerised deployments
• Strong debugging skills across distributed systems
