Sr Roadway Engineer -- PERM
- Location: Raleigh or Charlotte, NC
- Work Model: Hybrid (3 days in office)
- Travel: Low to minimal
- Compensation Range: $140,000 – $180,000, flexible based on experience and technical expertise
- Overtime: Straight Time overtime
- Relocation Assistance: Evaluated case‑by‑case; local candidates preferred
Required
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (North Carolina preferred)
- Extensive experience with OpenRoads Designer (ORD) in a SME or ORD Modeling experience
- 10+ years of roadway design experience (7+ years considered for strong candidates)
- Demonstrated experience delivering complex roadway projects with limited technical direction
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams

Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Roadway Engineer to join a growing Transportation team in North Carolina. This role is ideal for a highly experienced roadway design professional who thrives in a hands‑on technical leadership position, enjoys mentoring junior staff, and can independently deliver complex roadway projects from early design through final signed and sealed plans.
The Senior Roadway Engineer will serve as a technical lead and OpenRoads Designer (ORD) subject matter expert, supporting active and upcoming transportation projects for NCDOT and local municipalities while collaborating closely with project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Design
- Lead roadway design for transportation improvement projects, including intersections, roundabouts, interchanges, widenings, and bike/ped facilities
- Perform and oversee senior‑level roadway geometry, drainage, pavement markings, signing, and work zone traffic control design
- Independently advance projects from approximately 25% design through final plans, including signed and sealed deliverables
- Provide quality control (QC) reviews and ensure adherence to project scope, standards, and client requirements

Software & Technical Expertise
- Serve as a subject matter expert in OpenRoads Designer (ORD), including modeling and production workflows
- Utilize MicroStation and related roadway design tools; V8i experience is a plus
- Support the development of specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports as needed
Project & Team Collaboration
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers from other disciplines, and design staff to deliver quality projects on schedule and within budget
- Create, maintaining and monitoring scopes, fees, schedules, staffing projections, risk registers, QC documentation, and deliverable submittals
- Participate in internal and external project meetings, providing technical insight and roadway leadership
Mentorship & Professional Development
- Train and mentor junior and mid‑level roadway engineers, particularly in ORD and complex roadway design
- Provide technical direction with minimal oversight and promote best practices across the roadway team
- Collaborate with practice and office leadership to support continued growth in North Carolina
