Employment Type: Full-Time, On-Site

Posted by: LHH Recruitment Solutions

About the Opportunity

LHH is partnering with an innovative aerospace organization developing next‑generation high‑altitude platform systems. These platforms support advanced telecommunications, imaging, and remote sensing missions at stratospheric altitudes.

We are seeking a Lead Payload Systems Engineer to own the full lifecycle of mission payloads—from concept and requirements through integration, testing, and flight operations. This is a senior, hands‑on technical role ideal for someone who excels in complex system environments and wants to directly influence cutting‑edge airborne mission capabilities.

What You’ll Do

Payload System Ownership

  • Serve as the technical lead for all onboard payload systems across multiple programs.
  • Define and manage mechanical, electrical, thermal, RF, and data interfaces between payloads and the platform.
  • Ensure payload designs meet mission, safety, and performance requirements.

Integration & Verification

  • Develop and execute payload IV&V plans for lab, ground, and flight environments.
  • Lead integration test activities including mechanical fit checks, EMI/EMC, vibration, thermal‑vacuum, and functional testing.
  • Troubleshoot integration issues, support anomaly resolution, and guide root-cause investigations.

Cross-Functional & Vendor Coordination

  • Work closely with systems, avionics, flight operations, and mission planning teams to ensure seamless payload integration.
  • Act as the primary technical interface for payload suppliers and partners.
  • Lead major technical reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR) for payload subsystems.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Own payload ICDs, configuration management records, and test documentation.
  • Support compliance with relevant aerospace and regulatory standards (FCC, FAA, ITAR/EAR).
  • Prepare and contribute to flight-readiness and mission assurance materials.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to optimize payload designs, mass/power budgets, and integration processes.
  • Contribute to future payload architecture studies and capability development.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, or related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in payload systems design, integration, and/or flight operations.
  • Proven leadership of complex, multi‑disciplinary payload programs.
  • Strong systems engineering background including requirements, configuration management, and verification.
  • Experience with:
  • CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA)
  • System modeling tools (e.g., DOORS, Cameo, SysML)
  • Electrical power systems and data buses (Ethernet, SpaceWire, CAN)
  • Communications or remote sensing payloads (EO/IR, LiDAR, radar, telecom, etc.)
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and technical leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher.
  • Experience with HAPS, LEO satellites, UAVs, or high‑altitude systems.
  • Familiarity with FAA/NASA payload integration standards.

Work Environment & Perks

This organization offers:

  • Free onsite meals and snacks
  • Wellness amenities (gym, pickleball, outdoor dog area)
  • Pet‑friendly campus
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and disability coverage
  • 401(k) with company match
  • A collaborative, high‑performance engineering culture focused on innovation and mission impact
