Job Description
The Role:
VMEC (Vehicle Motion Embedded Controls) is hiring a Battery System Controls Calibration Engineer to join a production‑focused team that defines, develops, and improves calibration for control strategies, diagnostics, and controller communication on GM’s electric vehicles.
In this role, you will help turn advanced EV control designs into robust, production‑ready calibrations using data from simulation, lab, and vehicle environments. You will work under general supervision, collaborating closely with more senior calibrators and technical leaders while building deep expertise in high‑voltage battery diagnostics.
You will partner with software scrums, other calibration scrums, system safety, and validation teams on features spanning high‑voltage automotive systems, electric propulsion, and battery charging, helping ensure that software behaves safely, intuitively, and consistently for customers.
This space is rich with technical leadership opportunities, from driving new calibration methods and virtual test capabilities to shaping how we execute. We are looking for creative, highly motivated, detail‑oriented calibrators who are comfortable working across multiple engineering disciplines and business partners, can solve complex problems with data‑driven rigor, and thrive in a fast‑moving environment where collaboration and continuous improvement are core to how we deliver.
What You’ll do:
- Develop and maintain high‑voltage battery diagnostic calibrations for GM electric vehicles, including cell, pack, current, temperature, and controller‑integrity diagnostics, owning well‑defined calibration areas with guidance from senior calibrators.
- Implement and tune calibrations based on advanced EV control designs using data from simulation, lab benches, and vehicle testing, following established calibration methods and standards.
- Execute validation activities for diagnostic performance and robustness across SIL, HIL/ChIL, battery lab, and vehicle environments, analyzing results to confirm requirements are met and escalating issues appropriately.
- Collaborate closely with software scrums, other calibration scrums, system safety, and validation teams to ensure diagnostic calibrations align with feature intent, safety goals, and planned test coverage.
- Support calibration‑driven issue resolution by analyzing data, reproducing issues, proposing calibration changes, and driving closure of assigned actions in support of launch quality and field reliability.
- Apply and help refine standard work (procedures, test plans, calibration rules and checks) so HV battery diagnostics remain consistent and scalable across EV programs and architectures; provide feedback and contribute updates in your areas.
- Manage calibration content for your features through GM’s calibration tools and workflows (change management, reviews, and release processes) to ensure traceable, high‑quality software deliveries.
- Use product health and field data (e.g., diagnostic metrics and robustness indicators) to monitor performance in the field, identify trends in your ownership areas, and recommend calibration improvements to reduce customer‑impacting diagnostic issues.
- Demonstrate Level 6 behaviors by:
- Working under general supervision with limited day‑to‑day direction while knowing when to seek guidance.
- Collaborating effectively with more senior team members and cross‑functional partners.
- Taking ownership of assigned work, following through on difficult situations, and contributing to continuous improvement within your immediate team.
