The Role

We are looking for a Junior Backend Developer to join our team to build, optimize, and maintain the server-side logic of our applications. Our primary stack is Node.js and SQL, but we deal with a variety of web technologies.

You will be responsible for building robust APIs and ensuring seamless data flow. While the role is backend-focused, you should be comfortable working with the full-stack fundamentals and helping us navigate logic tucked away in our legacy PHP systems.

Core Responsibilities

• Feature Development: Build and maintain server-side logic and RESTful APIs using Node.js and Express.js.
• Database Management: Write, test, and optimize SQL queries in PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• Third-Party Integrations: Read, interpret, and implement external APIs (e.g., Google Maps, Mandrill, Payment Gateways) by following their technical documentation.
• Legacy Translation: Read and understand small snippets of PHP code to help transition business logic into our modern Node.js environment.

Technical Requirements (Must-Have)

• JavaScript​: Solid grasp of Node.js and the Express framework.
• Relational Databases: Proficiency in SQL (basic joins, CRUD operations, and schema understanding).
• API Literacy: A proven ability to read and implement third-party documentation from scratch.

• Web Fundamentals: High comfort level writing CSS and manipulating the DOM.
• Logic Reading: The ability to read and interpret code in other languages (specifically PHP) to understand existing business logic.
• Version Control: Strong knowledge of Git fundamentals (branching, merging, committing, and resolving basic conflicts).

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)

• Testing: Basic familiarity with Jest or other testing libraries.
• CMS Knowledge: Familiarity with WordPress or similar content management systems.
• Cloud Infrastructure: Exposure to AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, or Lambda).
• AI-Assisted Development: Experience using GitHub Copilot as a productivity accelerator (while still being able to code manually when needed).
• Specs-Driven Development: Experience or interest in working from technical specifications/blueprints before starting a build.
