Job Description
Aquila is building the future of energy, and it's made of light.
We're a fast-growing deep tech company based in Sydney on a mission to democratise energy accessibility. How? By building the world's first wireless energy network powered by light. Think of the internet, but instead of data, we're transmitting power. Our first frontier: laser beams that keep drones flying indefinitely and factory robots charging without ever stopping.
We're backed by world-class investors who believe in what we're building, with over $7 million (AUD) in funding from Blackbird, Possible, Icehouse, Startmate and the Australian Government. 2026 is shaping up to be our biggest year yet as we commercialise our technology and raise our Series A. If you're reading this, your timing is impeccable.
As an Electronics Engineer at Aquila, you will work on cutting-edge technology that has the potential to change how we distribute energy around the world: unlocking sustainable aviation, maritime and transportation.
No one has yet developed a fully functional, safe, and convenient end-to-end laser-based energy delivery system. Electronics testing and integration is a massive part of that. It's responsible for ensuring we can convert energy efficiently and safely. It ensures we can collect and transmit relevant data between integrated circuits and radio systems. Finally, it's vital in building high-speed laser-based targeting and safety systems.
This position fundamentally involves applying your aptitude, curiosity, and energy to solve these broad, integrated power electronics problems. Problems encouraging learning and growth, ideally leading towards being a pivotal part of our teams’ success.
You will
- Assume E2E ownership of projects, requirements gathering, project planning, design, simulation, working with manufacturers across domains, assembly, validation and handover
- Collaborate with other team members to build integrated test systems from the electronics perspective - then test, iterate and improve those electronic systems
- Develop, test, and integrate laser safety system electronics in close collaboration with our photonics engineer - helping ensure our technology is not just powerful, but safe.
- Own the complete end-to-end PCB design process, which includes collecting requirements, component selection, schematic design, layout design, board bring-up, validation, and full integration with the system.
- Conduct hands-on development, quickly de-risking designs and validating concepts before progressing to low-volume production.
- Design and implement high-efficiency laser drivers, blending proprietary and off-the-shelf solutions to push the boundaries of what's possible.
- Build and iterate integrated test systems from the electronics perspective, moving fast to de-risk designs and validate concepts before progressing to production.
- Integrate off-the-shelf radio systems and drone-mounted gimbals with our receiver module, extracting clean sensor data and precise gimbal control.
- Support the development and integration of receiver-side electronics as we bring our end-to-end wireless energy system to life.
- Communicate clearly: writing technical reports and presenting findings to the team and leadership.
- Roll up your sleeves and contribute wherever needed; at this stage of the company, every person shapes what Aquila becomes.
