Location: This role is based in Cape Town and will require relocation.


How you'll role

As a Network Specialist/Engineer at this ISP, you'll keep the company's network in top shape, configuring routers and switches, providing expert support, handling technical escalations, documenting setups, and training teammates. You'll collaborate on projects, optimise performance, and ensure security. What you'll do

  • Network management: configure and maintain routers, switches, VoIP equipment, and other network devices to ensure optimal performance and reliability of services
  • Technical support: provide expert-level support to both internal teams and external customers, helping to resolve complex network issues quickly and efficiently
  • Handling technical escalations: serve as a key point of contact for high-level technical escalations. Analyse and resolve complex problems that are escalated by team members, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations
  • Documentation: create and maintain detailed documentation for network architectures, configurations, and operational procedures to ensure consistency and knowledge sharing across the team
  • Training and development: assist in the training and development of other staff members
  • Conduct training sessions on network technologies and best practices to enhance team competence and performance
  • Collaboration and project management: work closely with other technical teams on deployment and optimisation projects. Ensure effective communication and coordination of efforts across departments to meet business objectives
  • Monitoring and optimisation: monitor network performance and execute strategic solutions to improve reliability, speed, and overall service quality


What you'll need

  • Minimum of Grade 12 complemented by technical certifications such as MTCRE (MikroTik Certified Routing Engineer), CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional), or CompTIA Network+
  • At least 3 years of experience in the ISP/Telecom industry
  • Routing and protocols: proficient in configuring and troubleshooting advanced routing protocols including BGP (Border Gateway Protocol). Experience with OSPF and MPLS is also advantageous
  • Network interconnects and peering: skilled in managing network interconnects and establishing peering relationships. Knowledgeable about the technical, administrative, and legal aspects of peering agreements
  • Compliance and security: ensure compliance with industry standards and maintain high standards of network security to protect company data and privacy
  • Switching: strong understanding of advanced switching concepts and technologies, including VLANs, STP, and LACP
  • VoIP configurations: experienced in setting up and maintaining VoIP systems, understanding SIP protocols, and ensuring QoS for voice traffic
  • Network troubleshooting: expertise in diagnosing network issues using advanced tools and techniques. Ability to quickly identify and resolve problems affecting network performance and stability
  • Network documentation: able to create detailed network diagrams and documentation that accurately reflect the current and future state of the network infrastructure
  • Monitoring tools: familiar with network monitoring software and able to configure and interpret outputs from tools such as LibreNMS, IRIS, Uptime Kuma or Wireshark
  • Security practices: knowledge of network security protocols and devices, including firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection systems (IDS)
