Job Description


Context And Mission


The BSC AI Factory Engineer is responsible for developing, adapting, and deploying AI solutions within the BSC AI Factory, leveraging advanced AI techniques and high-performance computing infrastructures such as MareNostrum-5. The role focuses on building scalable, reproducible, and production-ready AI pipelines, models, and architectures to support services delivered to industry, startups, and public institutions. The role also includes supporting AI Factory engagements with public sector organizations in Spain, ensuring alignment with national regulatory, linguistic, and institutional contexts.


Working closely with researchers, service project managers, and external users, the AI Factory Engineer contributes to data preparation, model training and fine-tuning, RAG architectures, benchmarking, and optimization, ensuring efficient use of AI Factory resources. The role combines strong technical expertise with a service-oriented mindset, supporting the continuous evolution and operational excellence of the BSC AI Factory.


This project is funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, in accordance with Council Regulation (EU) 2020/2094 of 14 December 2020, and regulated by Regulation (EU) 2021/241 of the European Parliament and of the

Council of 12 February 2021, in the context of the “BSC AI Factory” project.


The BSC AI Factory project has received funding from the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 101234399. The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Programme and Spain, Portugal, and Türkiye.

Key Duties


  • Design, develop, fine-tune, and deploy AI models and end-to-end pipelines as part of AI Factory service delivery, ensuring scalability, reproducibility, and production readiness.
  • Implement and optimize AI workloads on AI Factory computing environments (e.g. Playground, Fast Lane, Large Scale), making efficient use of MN5 and related infrastructures.
  • Prepare, process, and validate data for AI services, including feature engineering, dataset curation, and support for domain-specific use cases.
  • Design and implement advanced AI solutions such as RAG architectures, model adaptation strategies, benchmarking setups, and performance optimization workflows.
  • Provide hands-on technical support and expert advisory to AI Factory users, translating service requests into concrete technical outputs.
  • Collaborate with public sector organizations in Spain, supporting the design and delivery of AI solutions aligned with public administration needs, regulatory frameworks, and institutional requirements.
  • Adapt AI Factory services and technical solutions to the specific context of Spanish public sector entities, ensuring usability, compliance, and impact.
  • Collaborate with service project managers, researchers, and domain teams to deliver agreed technical outputs within defined service scopes and timelines.
  • Apply security, ethical, and governance guidelines across all technical deliverables produced within the AI Factory.
  • Document technical solutions, workflows, and best practices to support service standardization, reuse, and continuous improvement.


Requirements


Education

  • Degree in a technical or scientific field such as Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Advanced academic degrees (Master’s or PhD) in AI, machine learning, or related areas are a plus but not mandatory.


Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience

  • Proven experience in developing, training, and deploying AI models and pipelines in applied or productionlike environments.
  • Hands-on experience with modern AI frameworks and large-scale or high-performance computing infrastructures.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and delivering technical outputs within service-oriented or industrial contexts.


Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience

  • Exposure to cloud or hybrid computing environments and MLOps practices.
  • Experience supporting users or clients through technical advisory, training, or service delivery activities.
  • Familiarity with data governance, security, ethical AI, or compliance frameworks in applied AI projects.


Competences

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills applied to complex AI and data challenges.
  • Ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Service-oriented mindset with a focus on delivering reliable and high-quality technical outputs.

Conditions


  • The position will be located at BSC within the Directors Department
  • We offer a full-time contract (35h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 22 days of holidays + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
  • Starting date: asap
