AWS Cloud Security Engineer – Vulnerability / VMware / AWS

Location: Remote (Preferred: California or West Coast – Pacific Time)

Duration: 2-year contract with 1-year extension (up to 3 years total)

Client: Public Sector / Healthcare (Elyon / DHCS environment)

Position Overview

We are seeking an AWS Cloud Security Engineer / Security Engineering SME to support a large-scale Patch and Configuration Management initiative within a regulated enterprise environment.

This is a hands-on security engineering role focused on:

• Cloud security (AWS)
• Virtualized environments (VMware)
• Vulnerability management
• Patch and configuration hardening across enterprise systems

The role supports modernization efforts across cloud and infrastructure environments while strengthening security posture and reducing exposure to vulnerabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement cloud security controls to mitigate enterprise vulnerabilities
• Secure AWS environments including access control, monitoring, logging, and compliance alignment
• Implement security controls across cloud and virtualized infrastructure (VMware)
• Support patching, system upgrades, and configuration management processes
• Identify, assess, and remediate vulnerabilities through continuous monitoring and security assessments
• Collaborate with DevOps, infrastructure, and application teams to enforce secure architecture practices
• Contribute to security architecture documentation and engineering best practices
• Support transition toward more cloud-native and self-managed security models where applicable

Mandatory Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in Security Engineering or related field (FTE)
• Demonstrated experience in:
• Developing and implementing technical security solutions
• Mitigating security vulnerabilities across enterprise environments
• Bachelor’s degree in IT, Engineering, or related field
• Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of degree

Technical Experience (minimum 1 year in at least one area):

• Enterprise Virtual Environments (VMware strongly preferred)
• Enterprise Cloud Security (AWS preferred)
• Patching and system upgrades

Certifications (preferred)

• CISSP
• CompTIA Security+
• CCSP
• CCNA

Additional Experience

• AWS, Azure, or GCP security (AWS strongly preferred)
• VMware enterprise environments

Work Environment

• Remote-first role
• Must work Pacific Time hours
• Preferred: Candidates located in California or West Coast
• Nice to have: Ability to attend occasional on-site meetings in Sacramento, CA

• Proven ability to reduce vulnerabilities through practical engineering solutions
