Position Summary

HaloMD LLC is seeking a Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to join our Information Technology team. This role is responsible for the design, implementation, performance tuning, security, and ongoing administration of mission-critical database environments that support HaloMD's healthcare operations and client-facing platforms. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL, is fluent in Linux server administration, and understands the compliance obligations inherent in a HIPAA-regulated environment.


Key Responsibilities


Database Administration & Operations

  • Install, configure, and maintain Snowflake admin, Azure MS SQL and PostgreSQL instances on Linux and Windows environments.
  • Monitor database health, performance, and capacity; proactively identify and resolve bottlenecks.
  • Design and manage high-availability solutions including Always On Availability Groups, replication, and failover clustering.
  • Implement and maintain automated backup, recovery, and point-in-time restore procedures with documented RTO/RPO targets.
  • Manage database patching, upgrades, and version lifecycle planning in coordination with the infrastructure team.

Performance Tuning & Optimization

  • Analyze query execution plans, index strategies, and schema designs to optimize performance.
  • Establish and enforce database coding standards and query optimization guidelines for developers.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and capacity planning; provide recommendations for scaling or architectural changes.

Security & Compliance

  • Enforce role-based access control (RBAC), least privilege principles, and audit logging across all database platforms.
  • Ensure database configurations comply with HIPAA Security Rule requirements, including encryption at rest and in transit (TDE, SSL/TLS).
  • Participate in internal audits, vulnerability assessments, and risk reviews; remediate findings within defined SLAs.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of database configurations, user access, and change history.

Linux Systems Administration

  • Administer Linux servers (RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu) hosting database workloads, including OS tuning, storage management, and network configuration.
  • Manage cron jobs, shell scripts, and systemd services for database automation and monitoring tasks.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure engineers I/O optimization.

Development Collaboration & Support

  • Partner with application developers and data engineers to review schema designs, stored procedures, and ETL pipelines.
  • Provide Tier 3 escalation support for production database incidents; participate in on-call rotation as needed.
  • Support data migration projects, including schema conversion, data validation, and cutover planning.
  • Assist with integration between database platforms and enterprise tools such as Azure, SFTP infrastructure, and reporting systems.



Required Qualifications


Education


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field; equivalent professional experience may be considered.


Experience

  • 10+ years of hands-on DBA experience in production environments.
  • 3+ experience administering Snowflake
  • 3+ years of experience administering PostgreSQL (v12 or later) in a Linux environment.
  • 3+ years of experience administering AZ Microsoft SQL, including Always On AG configuration.
  • Demonstrated experience in a HIPAA-regulated or similarly compliance-driven industry (healthcare, finance, or government).


Technical Skills

  • Snowflake: RBAC, Warehouse Monitoring/Optimization, Data Security Policies, Data Classification & Masking, Data Retention Policies, Data Sharing (Inbound/outbound), Monitor and respond to Snowflake Health Insights
  • MS SQL Server: T-SQL, SSMS, SSRS/SSIS, Always On AG, SQL Server Agent, TDE, profiler/DMV-based tuning, Server Health Monitoring, Backup/Restore.
  • PostgreSQL: psql, pg_dump/pg_restore, logical/streaming replication, pg_stat views, vacuuming, extensions (pgAudit, pgBackRest).
  • Linux: RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu administration, bash scripting, cron, systemd, storage management (LVM, NFS, ext4/xfs).
  • Backup & Recovery: Ola Hallengren SQL Maintenance Solution, pgBackRest, Barman, or equivalent tooling.
  • Monitoring: Experience with SQL Server DMVs, pg_stat_*, and integration with monitoring platforms (Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog, or similar).
  • Security: Database encryption (TDE, pgcrypto), SSL/TLS configuration, audit logging, access control frameworks, Masking, RLS.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Admin certification.
  • Snowflake: Preferred SnowPro: Advanced Administrator
  • Experience with Azure SQL Managed Instance or Azure Database for PostgreSQL (Flexible Server).
  • Familiarity with SFTP platform administration (e.g., MOVEit,) in a healthcare data exchange context.
  • Exposure to data warehousing, columnar storage, or analytics database platforms (Snowflake,).
  • Experience with Ansible, Terraform, or other IaC tools for database provisioning.
  • Understanding HL7, FHIR, or healthcare data interchange standards is a plus.


Work Environment

  • Remote-first position; must maintain a secure, professional home office environment.
  • Standard business hours with flexibility required for maintenance windows and incident response outside normal hours.
  • Occasionally travel to HaloMD office or client sites for infrastructure projects or audits.
  • Ability to work with sensitive, protected health information (PHI) in compliance with HaloMD policies and HIPAA regulations.
