ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a highly skilled and versatile Senior Systems Engineer to manage and evolve a diverse IT infrastructure environment spanning Windows, Linux, VMware, networking, and cloud platforms. This is a hands-on individual contributor role with direct exposure to a broad range of technology initiatives and high visibility across all trading technology groups.
You will collaborate closely with the CTO, Engineering, and Data teams to maintain, build, and evolve our infrastructure — including physical servers at headquarters and an offsite datacenter. We are looking for someone who is technically deep, takes ownership, and wants to build a long-term career here.
This is a stable opportunity at a well-established $20 billion fixed income hedge fund with a collaborative IT team and senior leadership that values good infrastructure work.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Windows Server & Microsoft 365 — In-depth knowledge of Active Directory, Azure AD, MS Teams, and Multi-Factor Authentication. This represents approximately 70% of the day-to-day workload. Must be able to administer Windows environments from the command line without hesitation.
- Linux Administration — Hands-on enterprise Linux experience across any major distribution. Approximately 30% of the role. Must be comfortable building and configuring Linux environments from scratch including package management, user administration, and network configuration from the command line.
- Networking — Strong, proven understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, subnetting, and switch configuration. Experience with enterprise-grade firewalls (Palo Alto, Fortinet, or similar). Cloud portal knowledge alone is not sufficient — we need someone who understands how networks are actually architected.
- Email Security — Solid understanding of how email servers are found on the internet, including MX records, mail flow, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, spam filtering, malware protection, and DLP. Must be able to explain and troubleshoot these without referencing documentation.
- AWS/Cloud Computing — Hands-on experience provisioning and configuring EC2 instances, S3, IAM, VPC, and related services. Must understand what these services do and have real examples of using them in production.
- VMware vSphere — Experience managing and configuring VMware virtualized environments including ESXi and vCenter. New cluster builds and configuration experience is a plus.
- Physical Infrastructure — Hands-on experience with server hardware including racking, cabling, diagnostics, and component replacement. Must be able to periodically drive to our offsite datacenter as needed.
- Scripting & Automation — Working knowledge of PowerShell, Python, or Bash for task automation and workflow optimization. Must have real examples of scripts written from scratch.
- Security & Compliance — Familiarity with endpoint security, EDR tools, and IT compliance standards appropriate for a regulated financial services environment.
