About Us
QByte Studios is an independent game studio based in Victoria, Australia. We’re currently developing Nanites, a third-person action-builder survival game inspired by Fortnite: Save the World and Days Gone.
Set in a gritty, post-apocalyptic world overrun by rogue nanotech, Nanites blends story, base-building, combat, and survival strategy. We’re a small, passionate team focused on fun, innovation, and delivering high-quality experiences.
Role Overview
We’re looking for a Level Designer to help shape the world of Nanites. You’ll work closely with design, art, and programming teams to create engaging, immersive, and replayable environments that support both gameplay and narrative.
This is a contractor role with fully flexible hours and remote work you can work from anywhere, anytime, as long as progress is consistent and quality is high.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Design and build engaging levels using Unreal Engine 5
- Create layouts that balance exploration, combat, and resource gathering
- Block out levels and iterate based on playtesting and feedback
- Collaborate with artists and programmers to bring environments to life
- Design encounters, pacing, and player progression through levels
- Optimize level performance and ensure smooth gameplay flow
- Implement environmental storytelling and world-building elements
- Prototype and refine gameplay spaces to enhance player experience
Requirements

- Experience designing levels in Unreal Engine 5 (Blueprints preferred)
- Strong understanding of level design principles (flow, pacing, readability)
- Ability to design for combat, traversal, and player engagement
- Experience with blockouts, greyboxing, and iteration workflows
- Good communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
- Open to feedback and able to iterate quickly
Bonus
- Experience designing for survival, open-world, or base-building games
- Familiarity with lighting, composition, and environmental storytelling
- Knowledge of AI encounter design and spawn systems
- Experience with multiplayer level design considerations
- Familiarity with version control (Perforce, Git, etc.)
- Previous indie or mod project experience
- Passion for post-apocalyptic or sci-fi settings
Compensation Model
We are currently in the pre-revenue phase. All team members participate in a net revenue-sharing model once Nanites generates income, contributors who have meaningfully participated will receive a share.
We have contractor agreements in place to protect both parties.
