About us
We build the measurement layer for agricultural sustainability: Carbon Footprints for the livestock industry using our own certified models (and integration to other models), biodiversity assessments with remote sensing and emissions reductions planning. Our customers are agri-food processors and cooperatives, measuring and reducing the environmental impact of thousands of farms. We're small, science-led, past MVP, with paying customers in production.
The role
You'll own how we build: the deployment pipeline, the testing, the review standards, the architecture. Most of our engineers are in their first or second job, so you're also the senior they learn from.
It's a hands-on role and you'll still write code, but the job is leverage: raising the whole team's output, not only your own. People management isn't required, though we're open to it with the right person.

What you'll do
- De-risk the deployment pipeline so releases are fast, safe, and not tied to one person
- Build out CI/CD, automated testing, and monitoring
- Set code-review and engineering standards, with the authority to hold a release back
- Own the architecture and the decisions that shape how we build
Where you come in
We'll be straight about the state of things. The pipeline works but is slow and too person dependent. Automated testing is early. AI has lifted our velocity faster than our review and quality practices have kept up. The team is strong but has never had a senior technical lead. The product is live and customers depend on it.
What we're looking for
Essential
- 6 to 8 years building and shipping production software, including time as the senior others relied on.
- Real backend depth in a modern ecosystem (TypeScript/Node, Python, Java, Go or similar), REST APIs, and relational databases. We run Node/NestJS and Python; you don't need those exact tools, but you should get productive fast and have a view on the rest.
- You've led or mentored engineers and raised a team's bar beyond your own work. This is half the job.

You'll also need, or pick up fast
- CI/CD and automated testing at every level (unit, integration, end-to-end). De-risking our pipeline is core.
- Deploying and operating on cloud, with monitoring and alerts. We're on Azure. You don't need to be an infrastructure specialist, just enough to ship reliably.
- A working grasp of service-based architecture and its failure modes.
Nice to have
- You use AI across the workflow to raise code quality, testing, and DevOps, beyond writing features faster.
- Pragmatism about process at a small company. You build the right amount, not enterprise ceremony.
- You've built data- or calculation-heavy systems where the output has to be correct, not just available: pipelines, models, scientific or financial calculations. You know how to prove a number is right and catch it when it drifts.
You don't need agriculture, carbon footprint, or LCA knowledge; that's our domain and we'll teach you. And you don't need to have held the Tech/Engineering Lead title before, but you do need to have led in practice: owned the standard, brought other engineers up.
