Role Overview 

We're looking for a Technical Lead to take on senior technical leadership across our delivery organisation. This is a hands-on leadership role, not a purely strategic one: you'll set the technical and quality standard for a distributed team working across multiple platforms, mentor the engineers and technical leads growing into more senior roles, and be the person our team looks to as an example of how a great remote engineering leader communicates, decides, and builds. 

You'll work closely with our Principal Engineer and leadership team, with growing ownership of technology strategy over time. This role sits above any single platform. You're not the Magento specialist or the Odoo specialist, but you'll work closely with the senior engineers who are, helping architect solutions and unblock decisions across both. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Own end-to-end technical architecture and solution design across our delivery streams, staying hands-on enough to write code, debug, and unblock the team when it genuinely matters. 
• Champion an automation-first mindset across delivery, owning our approach to CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and test automation so quality is built into how we ship, not bolted on afterward. 
• Lead the team confidently through production incidents and other high-pressure situations, staying calm, decisive, and clear about next steps when things go wrong. 
• Set the communication standard for a distributed team: proactive, structured, and clear, in a way that gives the rest of the team something to strive toward. 
• Translate your own principles about how great engineering teams operate into concrete policies, documentation, and ways of working the team can actually run on. 
• Mentor senior engineers and emerging technical leads through pair programming, code review, and architecture discussion, building their capability, not just reviewing their output. 
• Partner with the Principal Engineer and leadership team on technology strategy, taking on increasing ownership of that strategy as the relationship develops. 
• Translate business requirements and client needs into technical solutions, thinking across technical, process, and commercial dimensions rather than technology alone. 
• Make timely, well-reasoned decisions in ambiguous or incomplete-information situations, and know the difference between a decision worth deliberating and one that needs fast forward motion. 
• Continuously challenge and improve how the team works: process, tooling, and emerging technology including AI-assisted development, rather than defaulting to what's already in place. 

What You'll Bring 

Communication that sets the standard 

• Near-native fluency in written and spoken English, with the precision to explain complex technical ideas clearly to technical and non-technical audiences alike. 
• A track record of communicating in a way others look to as the example: proactive, structured, and responsive, especially in a distributed, largely asynchronous team. 
• Comfort and credibility engaging directly with clients and senior stakeholders, not only with your immediate team. 

Technical depth you're still willing to use 

• 8+ years across application development, solution architecture, and DevOps practices, with genuine hands-on ability - you'll still write code and debug when it matters. 
• Experience building an automation-first delivery pipeline, from CI/CD through to test automation, so quality and speed reinforce each other rather than trading off. 
• The ability to ramp up quickly on unfamiliar platforms and technologies well enough to guide a team, even without being the original domain expert. 

Judgment across the whole problem, not just the code 

• The ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions, and to diagnose problems across technical, process, and commercial dimensions. 
• Comfort making real decisions with incomplete information, without getting stuck chasing missing detail before you can act. 
• A clear point of view on how great engineering teams run, and the ability to turn that into concrete, practical ways of working for this specific team. 

Leadership that brings people with you 

• A genuine mentoring instinct: you build others' capability through pairing, review, and honest feedback, not just sign-off. 
• A steady hand in a crisis, someone the team can rely on to stay calm and lead decisively when production issues or other high-pressure situations hit. 
• Willingness to raise dissenting views and push back on ideas, delivered tactfully rather than diplomatically avoided. 
• A restless streak: real dissatisfaction with “good enough,” and genuine curiosity about new tools and approaches, including AI-assisted development, balanced with enough decisiveness that improvement doesn't tip into disruption. 

Bonus Points 

• Prior experience as a CTO, Technical Lead, or Head of Technology at a startup or other small, fast-moving company. 
• Direct experience with Magento and/or Odoo, or comparable mid-market e-commerce/ERP platforms. 
• Prior experience mentoring engineers into technical leadership roles. 
• Experience operating as a senior technical voice for a distributed team serving Australian or Western clients.
