Job Description

Senior AOSP Engineer (100% remote within the EU)

We are partnering with a high-growth product company operating at the intersection of Android, video technology and real-time communications. The team develops custom Android-powered devices alongside a cloud platform that enables large-scale device management, orchestration and lifecycle operations.

This role sits between Android application development and AOSP engineering. We're looking for engineers who enjoy building production features and user-facing functionality, while also understanding how Android works under the hood. You'll work across applications, framework services and platform components on a customised Android platform, collaborating closely with backend, cloud, platform and hardware teams to deliver scalable, high-performance solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain Android applications and platform-integrated features on a custom AOSP-based platform
  • Build high-performance experiences involving video, camera, streaming, device management and real-time communications
  • Develop features spanning Android applications, framework integrations and platform services
  • Extend and customise AOSP components to support product requirements
  • Collaborate with backend, cloud, platform and hardware teams to deliver end-to-end functionality
  • Investigate and resolve complex issues across application, framework and system layers
  • Support performance optimisation, stability improvements and platform reliability initiatives
  • Contribute to architecture decisions around Android services, APIs and platform capabilities

Requirements

  • Strong Android and AOSP experience, including hands-on work with Android Open Source Project (AOSP), custom Android distributions, Android framework services and system image development. You should be comfortable building and debugging Android applications while understanding how they interact with underlying platform components, system services and customised device environments.
  • Strong systems-level Android knowledge, including C/C++ development, Android NDK and native services, with an understanding of performance optimisation, memory management and multithreaded systems.
  • Comfortable working with Android IPC mechanisms (Binder, AIDL, HIDL), framework-to-service communication, and debugging issues across application, framework and platform layers.
  • Experience integrating with Android HAL components and device capabilities such as cameras, audio/video pipelines, sensors and custom peripherals, with exposure to Linux, driver-level or kernel-adjacent environments advantageous.
  • Good understanding of Android security concepts including permissions, sandboxing, SELinux policies and secure device configuration.
  • Experience working with AOSP tooling and build systems (Soong/Make), Git-based development workflows, CI/CD pipelines and Android debugging tools including ADB, Logcat, Systrace and system profiling utilities.

Nice to Have

  • Experience modifying Android framework components
  • Experience with WebRTC, OpenGL ES or media frameworks
  • Exposure to embedded Android devices
  • Experience with device provisioning or fleet management platforms
  • Linux or embedded systems experience
  • Knowledge of real-time media processing or streaming technologies

What stands out?

  • Engineers with genuine AOSP experience who are comfortable working beyond the application layer
  • Strong Android developers who can navigate application, framework and system-level challenges
  • Problem-solvers who enjoy diagnosing complex performance, reliability and integration issues
  • Individuals who take ownership and are comfortable working across multiple parts of the Android stack
  • Developers who care deeply about performance, scalability, reliability and user experience

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to work on real Android products rather than traditional mobile apps. You'll help shape a customised Android platform used at scale, contributing across applications, framework services and system integrations while working alongside experts in cloud, platform, video and embedded engineering.

If you enjoy building Android software and have a genuine interest in AOSP internals, platform behaviour and system-level problem solving, we'd love to hear from you.
