Job Description

About the role:

This is a full-time role based in Whangārei at our main office. You will regularly visit client sites and, where appropriate, may occasionally work from home.

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will work closely with Account Managers, Systems Engineers, and other team members to design, implement, and support reliable, scalable IT solutions for both our clients and our internal systems.

You will lead and deliver IT projects and upgrades, act as a senior escalation point for complex issues, and provide mentorship and technical guidance to other engineers. You will also contribute to improving standards, documentation, and technical practices across the business.

The role supports a wide variety of customers, from small businesses with a handful of users through to larger organisations with hundreds of users and complex environments.

To be successful in this role you must have the following attributes:

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team
  • Confidence engaging directly with customers, stakeholders, and vendors
  • Proven experience in a senior or advanced systems engineering role
  • A genuine passion for problem-solving and learning new technologies
  • The ability to work independently, take ownership of outcomes, and make sound technical decisions
  • A current New Zealand driver’s licence
  • Industry-recognised certifications and formal training are advantageous but not essential.

Some of the key tasks in this role:

Project delivery

  • Lead and contribute to short- and long-term client projects
  • Design and implement solutions aligned with best practice and customer requirements
  • Assist with technical scoping, solution design, and implementation planning

Technical support & escalation

  • Act as a senior escalation point for complex or high-impact issues
  • Troubleshoot and resolve advanced infrastructure, networking, and cloud problems
  • Provide guidance and support to other engineers during escalations
  • Provide day-to-day operational support, including SLA visits, general issue resolution, and hands-on client work, alongside project and escalation responsibilities

Technical leadership & documentation

  • Mentor and support less experienced team members
  • Contribute to internal standards, documentation, and knowledge sharing
  • Maintain high-quality job notes, time entries, system documentation, and diagrams

Core skills and technologies required for this role:

You will have strong experience across most of the following:

  • Microsoft server technologies including Windows Server, Active Directory, SQL, Exchange, SharePoint, and Remote Desktop Services
  • Microsoft cloud services including Microsoft 365 and Azure / Entra ID
  • Windows desktop environments and Microsoft Office
  • Virtualisation and storage platforms
  • Networking technologies including firewalls, switching, and Wi-Fi
  • IT security products and best practices (backup, MFA, endpoint protection, etc.)
  • Experience working in hybrid cloud environments is highly desirable.
