Job Description

Mudflap serves the $800B trucking industry, the backbone of the U.S. economy. Our market-leading payment products help truckers save thousands of dollars on fuel (their #1 business expense), while providing our fuel stop partners with access to new, hard-to-reach customers. We’re a fast-growing marketplace business looking for a new customer-obsessed teammate to join us on this exciting journey.

As our Payroll & Benefits Manager, you’ll lead payroll and benefits operations, ensuring accurate compensation and a strong employee experience. You’ll be the go-to expert ensuring our systems are compliant and scalable, while partnering with Finance, People, and external vendors to maintain a seamless employee experience across the board, from payroll and benefits to equity administration.

Work Location:

This role can be fully remote within the U.S. While we operate across multiple time zones, most collaboration happens during Pacific Time working hours. Candidates should be able to work a schedule aligned with the PT time zone.

Expectations (In this role, you will):

  • Own end-to-end payroll processing for both exempt and non-exempt employees, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance across payroll and tax requirements
  • Review, audit, and reconcile payroll inputs (salary, bonuses, commissions, overtime, deductions, withholdings, and equity-related income), resolve discrepancies, and ensure accurate reporting in our ERP
  • Lead benefits administration across health, retirement, leave programs, and statutory benefits, partnering with our broker on renewals, plan design, vendor management, and end-to-end open enrollment
  • Manage equity administration through Carta, including grants, vesting, exercises, and terminations
  • Develop and maintain policies, processes, and internal controls across payroll, benefits, and equity, while identifying opportunities to improve workflows, automate where possible, and reduce operational risk as we scale
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee questions related to ADP, payroll, benefits, and equity, partnering closely with People, Finance, Legal, and external vendors

Experience (What we look for):

  • 5+ years of experience in payroll (exempt and non-exempt) and benefits programs; equity administration experience strongly preferred.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise with ADP required.
  • Experience with Carta and HRIS is a strong plus.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information with discretion and sound judgment.
  • Clear, effective communicator who can explain complex payroll and equity topics to employees.
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-moving environment.
  • Process-driven mindset with a focus on continuous improvements.

Perks and Benefits (What we offer):

  • Competitive salary and equity in a high-growth startup
  • Multiple health benefit options
  • Responsible Time Off
  • 401(k) matching
  • Opportunities and support for major career growth
  • Annual Company offsite event (Mudfest!)

The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $110,000.
