Within this mission, the ICT and Digitization Department at HT is expanding and seeking professionals with specific expertise in virtualization related tasks.
We are seeking an ambitious Senior Virtualization Engineer to support the activities of the Data Centre Facility.
Your mission
As Senior Virtualization Engineer you will be responsible for the design, implementation, and optimization of the institute's virtualization and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments. The successful candidate will ensure the performance, availability, security, and scalability of virtualization platforms, supporting business-critical applications, research, and enterprise ICT operations. You will lead strategic initiatives, automation efforts, and cross-functional collaboration to enhance infrastructure efficiency and resilience and reports to the Core Services Manager.

- Architecting, deploying, and managing virtual infrastructure environments (hypervisors, orchestration, virtual storage, virtual desktop infrastructure);
- Ensuring high availability, resource optimization, and disaster recovery (DR) strategies;
- Optimizing hypervisor clusters, virtual networking, and storage for maximum efficiency;
- Defining and enforcing virtualization best practices for performance, security, and lifecycle management;
- Deploying and managing Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, including Connection Servers, Virtual Access Gateways and Application Volumes;
- Optimizing desktop pools, image management, and user experience for VDI environments;
- Implementing automation and scripting to streamline VDI operations;
- Troubleshooting VDI and Virtual Application performance issues, including latency, GPU acceleration, and storage bottlenecks;
- Developing automation for virtual infrastructure deployments, provisioning, and configuration management;
- Leveraging scripting models such as PowerCLI, Terraform, and Ansible for infrastructure automation;
- Streamlining VDI onboarding and scaling processes through scripting and orchestration tools;
- Ensuring compliance with ICT security policies, regulatory standards, and virtualization vendors security hardening guidelines;
- Collaborating with CyberSecurity team to harden hypervisor hosts, and VDI access policies;
- Implementing Zero Trust security models for VDI access and endpoint management;
- Leading virtualization and VDI infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and lifecycle management projects;
- Leading the diagnosis and resolution of complex virtualization-related incidents to minimize downtime;
- Conducting root cause analysis (RCA) and implement proactive measures to prevent recurring issues;
- Monitoring hypervisor clusters, VDI resource utilization, and capacity trends to optimize performance;
- Maintaining up-to-date virtualization and VDI documentation, configurations, and operational procedures;
- Establishing and enforce VDI deployment standards, policies, and operational guidelines;
- Conducting training sessions and mentor members of the ICT team to enhance team capabilities.

Essential
What you'll bring
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field;
- Minimum of 5 years in VMware infrastructure engineering, virtualization architecture, or end-user computing (EUC);
- Expert-level knowledge of virtualization systems such as (VMware, OpenStack, Hyper-V or others);
- Strong experience with VDI infrastructure and Application Volumes (Horizon or others);
- Understanding of networking (Virtual Distributed Switches - vDS, VLANs) and storage (vSAN, NFS, iSCSI) technologies;
- Ability to lead VDI strategy, architecture, and large-scale deployments;
- Fluency in English (written and spoken);
- Willingness to relocate to Italy.
- Master’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field;
- Proficiency in automation scripting/systems such as PowerCLI, vRealize Automation (vRA), Terraform, Ansible or similar;
- VMware Certified (VCAP) – Data Center Virtualization (VCAP-DCV);
- Citrix Certified Associate, Virtualization (CCA-V);
- Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104);
- Red Hat Certified Specialist in Virtualization or simular;
- ITIL certified.
