Situated within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Australian Government Consulting (AGC) helps the Australian Public Service (APS) confidently meet current and future challenges in-house and selectively engage external consultants in a way that maximises value-for-money.

We do this by delivering high-quality consulting projects that reflect our distinctive character as government consultants working for public impact (and nothing else).

We use consulting methods and deep knowledge of government to deliver strategic policy advice and organisational transformation projects. Situated within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, we work in partnership with APS agencies on a wide range of high-profile issues that make a real difference to the wellbeing of Australians.

We support APS clients to advise the government of the day, implement policies and deliver services to the community.

What You Will Do

We are looking for exceptionally talented Organisational Performance Consultants, Strategy Consultants or those who have a track record of delivering solutions to complex strategic problems, who are inspired by our mission to deliver public impact. You will work with a high-performing team to deliver management consultancy projects for Australian Public Service clients.

As a Manager, You Will

  • Work closely with partners and clients to drive and deliver end-to-end high quality strategic consulting projects that meet client needs, aligned to AGC’s strategic policy and organisational transformation service lines.
  • Manage client relationships and skilfully engage with key stakeholders to influence outcomes.
  • Provide thought leadership across AGC to refine and expand AGC’s service offer, while lending your expertise to other project teams and proposing innovative ideas and solutions to drive AGC forward.
  • Apply strong critical and strategic thinking and an entrepreneurial mind-set.
  • Apply structured problem-solving techniques to policy and organisational challenges, facilitate workshops and interviews, analyse data and deliver meaningful results.
  • Manage and mentor AGC staff in a positive and uplifting manner, contributing to AGC’s culture and capability.

What you will not be doing

Candidates should note that AGC does not currently have specialised service lines in following areas:

  • Project management
  • Tech consulting or large-scale digital transformation
  • Cyber security
  • Non-advisory professional services (e.g. internal audit).

What You Will Bring

Our ideal candidate will perform at the relevant level in accordance with the PM&C Performance model .

As a Manager, You Will Bring

  • Advanced expertise in a consulting or advisory environment (or similar public sector roles such as taskforces or strategic policy units) that aligns with our strategic policy and organisational performance service offerings
  • The ability (or the willingness to rapidly learn), quantitative analytic techniques to generate insights, support problem-solving and enable decision-making
  • The ability to plan effectively and exercise initiative and judgment to deliver high quality work products which have been tested
  • The ability to communicate clearly and persuasively with internal and external audiences to drive the development of solutions
  • The ability to work autonomously and at pace to deliver results in sometimes uncertain and high-pressure work environments
  • The ability to work collaboratively in a team and create an inclusive environment with people at all levels
  • Flexibility and resilience to deliver results, maintain team morale and manage expectations in ambiguous and sometimes high-pressure work environments.

The Following Is Highly Desirable, But Not Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant degree (e.g. Economics, Data, Law, Finance, Science, Policy, etc)
  • Significant experience working in a consulting firm, or an APS employee who has previously worked in similar public sector roles such as taskforces or strategic policy units
  • Proficiency working in PowerPoint and Excel, or willingness to build these skills quickly.

Eligibility

  • Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999 , employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency Head has agreed otherwise, in writing. At PM&C to be eligible for this position you should be an Australian Citizen by the completion of the recruitment process , except under exceptional circumstances.
  • The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance, or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level.
  • The successful candidate will be assessed through our pre-employment screening checks, such as an Australian Criminal History Check, and will normally be subject to a six-month probation period if new to the APS or has not yet completed their probation period elsewhere in the APS.
