Position: SQL Database Administrator II (intermediate-level)

Salary Range: $80,000 - $100,000 (depending on level of relevant experience, firm cap)

Role Description 

The SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of Microsoft SQL Server environments across multiple clients. This role ensures high availability, performance, security, and recoverability of all database systems while supporting development teams, business stakeholders, and mission‑critical applications. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

Database Administration & Maintenance 

  • Install, configure, and maintain SQL Server instances (on‑premises and/or cloud). 
  • Perform routine health checks, performance tuning, and index/Statistics maintenance. 
  • Manage database backups, restores, and disaster recovery strategies. 
  • Monitor system performance and proactively identify bottlenecks or risks. 

High Availability & Disaster Recovery 

  • Implement and support HA/DR solutions such as:

-Always On Availability Groups

-Failover Clustering

-Log Shipping

-Replication.

  • Conduct regular failover testing and ensure RPO/RTO objectives are met. 

Security & Compliance 

  • Manage database security, including logins, roles, permissions, and encryption. 
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations. 
  • Audit database activity and maintain proper documentation. 

Development & Support 

  • Collaborate with clients and developers to optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, and schema design. 
  • Troubleshoot database‑related issues and provide on‑call support as needed. 

Automation & Optimization 

  • Automate routine tasks using T‑SQL or SQL Agent Jobs. 
  • Implement monitoring and alerting solutions for proactive issue detection. 
  • Continuously evaluate and improve database performance and reliability. 

Soft Skills 

  • Strong customer service skills and ability to work directly with clients. 
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities. 
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment. 
  • Detail‑oriented mindset with a focus on reliability and uptime. 

 

Must-Have Qualifications: 

  • 3 – 7 years of experience as a SQL Server DBA.
  • Strong proficiency with SQL Server versions 2016–2025. 
  • Deep knowledge of T‑SQL, query optimization, and execution plans. 
  • Experience with HA/DR technologies and backup/restore strategies.
  • Some Oracle database knowledge (can be minimal).
  • Familiarity with Windows Server administration. 
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals, storage, and virtualization. 
  • Strong customer service and communication skills. 

 

Nice-to-Have Qualifications: 

  • Experience with Azure SQL, Managed Instance, or hybrid cloud environments. 
  • Knowledge of SSRS, SSIS, or SSAS. 
  • Experience with monitoring tools (e.g. Idera, Redgate, SolarWinds). 
  • PowerShell scripting for automation. 
  • Other database systems knowledge (e.g. Oracle, PostgreSQL, MariaDB/MySQL, SAP).
  • Certifications such as Microsoft Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300).
  • Familiarity with Snowflake.
