Women for Afghan Women is a grassroots organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights of Afghan women, girls, and families. With community centers in New York and Virginia, and a strong foundation of work across Afghanistan, WAW provides direct services, including case management, legal support, counseling, educational programs, and youth leadership initiatives, rooted in cultural competence and gender equality. Position Summary
We are seeking a Social Media & Digital Communications Manager (Contractor) to support our digital presence across social media platforms and our website. This role functions as a strategic digital communicator responsible for developing platform strategy, creating engaging content, maintaining website content, and supporting search visibility through practical SEO practices. The position will serve as a connector between storytelling, digital presence, and audience engagement by transforming stories into platform-ready content.
This position is both strategic and hands-on. The contractor will take ownership of day-to-day social media content creation while contributing ideas that strengthen audience engagement, increase visibility, and support fundraising and awareness goals.
The ideal candidate understands how digital platforms function differently and tailors content to match each platform’s style and audience. They bring forward ideas that reflect evolving trends and best practices in digital communications. Candidates must have access to their own equipment and be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively. Some organizational software and tools will be provided.
The Social Media & Digital Communications Manager will join the Development and Marketing/Communications team as a contract position with a minimum three-month commitment.
This position is fully remote. The selected candidate must be available to work approximately 3–4 hours per day, Monday through Thursday, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
Compensation: $1,800 per month
Hours: 10-12 per week
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive social media strategy aligned with campaigns, fundraising priorities, and storytelling goals
- Determine platform-specific posting cadence and content approaches
- Identify opportunities for audience growth and engagement
- Tailor content to individual platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X, and LinkedIn
- Recommend new ideas and approaches that reflect current social media trends
- Maintain a rolling social media content calendar
- Schedule posts in advance using approved scheduling tools
- Monitor comments and direct messages and respond to routine engagement
- Escalate sensitive communications when needed
- Create daily and weekly social media content, including:
- Static posts, Carousels, Stories, Short-form video content such as reels
- Design graphics using established brand templates
- Edit photos into shareable formats
- Create short-form video content using built-in platform editing tools in addition to Canva and video applications
- Add captions, text overlays, and formatting appropriate for each platform
- Write captions that reflect organizational voice, messaging, and campaign priorities.
- Adapt long-form content into short-form social media posts
- Maintain visual consistency and brand alignment across all platforms

- Maintain and update website content to keep information accurate and current
- Upload blog posts and stories
- Update program descriptions and campaign messaging

- Collaborate with the Content & Storytelling Manager to publish new content and maintain organized site structure
- Write optimized page titles and meta descriptions
- Apply appropriate keywords to blog posts and web content
- Organize content to support search indexing and visibility
- Review website content and recommend improvements that increase discoverability
- Monitor basic SEO performance indicators
- Suggest practical improvements that support organic traffic growth
- Track social media engagement and growth metrics
- Monitor website traffic trends
- Prepare monthly digital performance reports
- Identify high-performing content and engagement patterns
- Recommend adjustments based on performance insights
- Highlight how digital platforms contribute to audience growth and fundraising goals
- Support fundraising visibility by aligning digital content with fundraising campaigns and priorities.
- Coordinate digital publishing across social media and website channels
- Align digital content with campaign timelines and messaging
- Collaborate closely with the Content & Storytelling Manager to transform stories into digital content
- Support consistency across platforms and campaigns
- Work independently while aligning with organizational priorities and brand standards
- Oversee the publishing workflow across digital platforms to ensure timely and coordinated release of content.

Qualifications:
As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of WAW and be driven by its mission. Beyond that, we are seeking a candidate who is both strategic and creative. They are comfortable managing day-to-day execution while thinking ahead about growth opportunities. They take initiative, bring forward ideas, and understand how digital platforms support storytelling, fundraising, and audience engagement. They are organized, responsive, and able to balance creativity with consistency.
- 3–5 years of experience managing social media and digital communications
- Demonstrated experience creating content for multiple social media platforms
- Strong graphic design and content creation skills
- Experience creating short-form video content for social media
- Understanding of practical SEO techniques for content optimization
- Strong writing skills, particularly caption writing and adapting long-form content
- Experience tracking analytics and reporting on digital performance
- Ability to manage deadlines and work independently
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to brand consistency
- Experience working with nonprofit organizations
- Experience supporting fundraising or awareness campaigns
- Familiarity with social media scheduling tools
- Basic photo and video editing skills
- Experience using Google Analytics or similar tools
- Understanding of audience engagement strategies for mission-driven organizations
- Experience working with program and finance teams.
- Demonstrated commitment to women’s advocacy and human rights.
