At Icalia Labs we build high-impact software products and AI-powered solutions for startups and enterprise clients. We're hiring a Backend Engineer for one of our most strategic client engagements, an AI platform operating in the same ecosystem as Anthropic and OpenAI.

What You'll Build

• End-to-end integrations with third-party APIs (authentication, request proxying, error handling, retries, and rate limiting)
• Usage tracking and billing logic across the full request lifecycle
• Internal TypeScript SDKs and private npm packages consumed by AI systems and developer platforms
• Streaming and async usage calculation systems
• WebSocket-based integrations when required by vendor APIs

What We're Looking For

• 4+ years of backend engineering with TypeScript/Node.js in production
• Hands-on experience integrating third-party APIs with OAuth 2.0 and API key-based authentication flows
• Ability to articulate integration projects, architectural decisions, and technical tradeoffs with clarity
• Strong product sense, ability to make sound, justified decisions under ambiguous or incomplete specifications

• Proven ability to read vendor documentation independently and translate it into reliable, production-ready integrations
• Experience in startup environments or high-ownership teams where scope evolves and autonomy is expected
• Active GitHub with meaningful, recent contributions is required, profiles without demonstrable public code activity will not be considered
• Native Spanish speaker
• Conversational to professional English

Nice to Have

• AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, serverless architectures)
• Experience implementing usage-based billing or request-level cost metering
• Integrations with AI or developer platform APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, ElevenLabs, etc.)
• Greenfield or R&D experience with evolving scope and minimal initial context

Selection Process

A. Technical screening form (~3 minutes)

B. Video submission in English (2–3 minutes)

C. Internal evaluation and client presentation

D. Technical interview with the client (1 hour) — includes a live coding exercise designed to assess product thinking, technical judgment, and real-time problem-solving

E. Integration phase, approximately one week of direct collaboration with the project; fully compensated

F. Formal contracting

G. In-person onboarding in Mexico City — 3 to 4 days; travel and accommodation fully covered

Please note: candidates must be available and willing to travel to Mexico City for the onboarding phase as a condition of the engagement.

📄 Initial 6-month contract with strong potential for extension
