Job Description
## About the Role
Comet Consulting Group works with clients across manufacturing, financial services, and healthcare. We support clients through complex initiatives including mergers and acquisitions, cloud transitions, and IT security enhancements. Comet's MSP is growing and we're looking for the right person to join our group!
The MSP Engineer II is a full-time remote position for someone with deep Microsoft knowledge and proven managed services experience. You'll own complex troubleshooting, support and monitor client infrastructure, and serve as a technical resource for junior engineers managing escalations. The broader work involves building advanced solutions that bring device management, identity and access management, and network security together into well-run, defensible client environments. That same thinking applies internally — improving the tools and processes Comet uses to deliver. Migrations, security enhancements, and infrastructure projects run alongside the managed services work. You'll contribute to process improvement and documentation, and when something isn't working, the expectation is that you identify it and help fix it.
What You'll Do
Advanced Troubleshooting
- Own complex incident resolution across assigned accounts; escalate only what requires a senior engineer or specialist.
- Act as the primary technical contact on assigned accounts, working with the MSP Director on account strategy and delivery.
- Serve as a technical resource for junior engineers, working through escalations and guiding resolution.
- Diagnose complex problems, perform root-cause analysis, and document clear, repeatable solutions.
- Design and implement solutions that integrate device management, identity and access management, and network security into cohesive, well-documented client environments.
MSP Platform Development
- Write and maintain SOPs for recurring managed services tasks: onboarding, offboarding, and common incident resolution workflows.
- Manage account-level KB articles, keeping technical notes, environment details, and known issue documentation current.
- Review and update runbooks when processes or tooling change; flag stale documentation before it causes delivery problems.
- Document post-incident findings for complex or recurring tickets, capturing root cause, resolution steps, and any process changes made.
- Build and improve internal solutions and processes, applying the same technical standards used in client delivery.
- Use RMM, PSA, EDR/MDR, and Microsoft tooling to monitor, automate, and document client environments.
Project Delivery
- Execute project work across M365 configurations, device management rollouts, mail flow changes, and identity migrations.
- Contribute project task execution under senior consultant or MSP Director direction; flag scope risk early.
- Apply migration tooling to support large-scale solution deployments and integration work.
- Write PowerShell scripts and use Microsoft Graph to automate and streamline delivery tasks.

What You'll Bring
Required
- 5+ years in an MSP environment, or equivalent internal IT experience with proven breadth across Microsoft technologies.
- Strong background in managed services, including experience supporting multi-tenant environments and handling escalated technical issues.
- Advanced working knowledge of the Microsoft 365 stack: Exchange Online, Intune, Entra ID, Teams, SharePoint Online, and Defender products.
- Deep technical proficiency in one core domain: identity and access management, endpoint management, network security, or Microsoft security operations.
- Proficiency with Windows Server and common networking concepts including DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, and routing; Linux and virtualization platform experience (VMware, Hyper-V) is a plus.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure and working knowledge of common MSP tooling: RMM, PSA, backup, and monitoring platforms.
- Direct experience with migration tooling used in client delivery, not lab work.
- Ability to write PowerShell scripts and use Microsoft Graph for administration and automation.
- Solid understanding of security practices: patch management, endpoint protection, access control, and compliance-focused configurations.
- EDR and MDR operational experience.
- Clear written and verbal communication; able to work with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Expert-level Microsoft certification in your core focus area (MS-102, SC-300, MD-102, MS-700, AZ-500, or equivalent).
- Two or more Microsoft Associate-level certifications across domains.
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred
- 2+ years of MSP experience with account ownership or technical lead responsibility.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or acting as a technical escalation point within a team.
- Track record of identifying recurring problems and building durable fixes, not just resolving tickets.
- Ability to scope and estimate technical work independently, including flagging risk before it affects delivery.
- Experience contributing to or leading internal process improvement initiatives.
- Comfort operating without a defined playbook — able to research, test, and document a solution path for novel issues.
- Exposure to client environment onboarding: assessing an inherited environment, documenting gaps, and building a remediation plan.
Browse our curated collection of remote jobs across all categories and industries, featuring positions from top companies worldwide.
- Experience authoring technical documentation for internal and client-facing audiences.
- Demonstrated habit of leaving environments and processes better documented than you found them.
Schedule
- Fully remote; NEOH, PA, MI, IN, or KY preferred.
- Standard business hours with flexibility based on client and team needs.
- Travel: minimal, less than 10% per quarter.
What's In It For You
- Base Salary: $60,000 to $95,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Bonus: Annual performance-based.
- Remote: Work from home with limited travel.
- Benefits: Medical, dental, vision; flexible time off and company holidays; 401(k) with 6% employer match (traditional and Roth); paid volunteer time.
- Growth: Paid training and certifications, annual development budget, and clear paths to MSP Engineer III, Manager, or beyond.
