Job Description

This role is for senior backend engineers who want ownership over AWS architecture, not just feature delivery.

You will help design, scale and clean up a complex serverless backend platform used in healthcare environments where reliability and security matter.

Company profile

A healthtech software company in Amsterdam builds digital products for surgical education and operating room support. The platform is used by hospitals, universities and medical teams worldwide.

Technically, the company is in transition. For years, development was largely outsourced. The backend is already heavily serverless and AWS based, but the internal engineering organisation is now being rebuilt to take full ownership of architecture, cost, reliability and long term scalability.

There is one engineering team working across multiple products and services. No separate DevOps team. No handoffs. Backend engineers own their infrastructure, code and operational decisions end to end.

The environment is international, English speaking and engineering driven. Hybrid setup with an Amsterdam office.

Role description

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you are expected to take technical ownership of the AWS backend from day one.

You will work on:

  • a large scale serverless backend supporting web and mobile applications
  • data flows that support medical workflows and content pipelines
  • shared backend architecture, infrastructure and standards

Your responsibilities go beyond writing code:

  • Design, build and operate backend services using Node.js and TypeScript
  • Own AWS architecture decisions including service selection, scaling and cost trade offs
  • Build and maintain infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (AWS CDK)
  • Design event driven, resilient systems using AWS native patterns
  • Improve observability, reliability and operational readiness
  • Identify architectural issues and reduce structural complexity over time
  • Work closely with frontend and product teams to translate requirements into robust systems

This role assumes you are comfortable working without a dedicated DevOps team and understand the operational consequences of architectural decisions.

Requirements

Required:

  • 7+ years of backend engineering experience
  • Strong production experience with Node.js and TypeScript
  • Deep hands on AWS experience in serverless environments
  • Strong knowledge of core AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, S3, EventBridge, Step Functions and IAM
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code, preferably AWS CDK
  • Experience designing and operating event driven or cloud native architectures
  • Solid understanding of observability, security and CI/CD in AWS
  • Ability to work autonomously and make architectural decisions
  • Fluent English communication

Nice to have:

  • Experience with DocumentDB or MongoDB, plus DynamoDB or Aurora
  • AWS certifications (Architect level)
  • Experience with cost optimisation and FinOps principles
  • Background in regulated domains such as healthcare or finance
  • Exposure to AI driven features or AWS AI services
  • Some frontend experience, especially Angular

Conditions

  • Salary up to €75.000 gross per year
  • Exceptional profiles up to €80.000
  • Hybrid working model with 2 office days per week in Amsterdam
  • Travel allowance or public transport card
  • Laptop of choice (Apple or Microsoft)
  • Daily lunch and snacks
  • Training and development budget
  • Pension plan
  • Visa sponsorship available
