Position Summary: The Director of People & Engagement is a strategic, mission-driven leader responsible for shaping and advancing Futuro Health’s people strategy across a multi-state organization in service of improving the health and wealth of communities. In close partnership with the executives and the rest of the leadership team, this role drives strategic impact by aligning talent, culture, and scalable people systems with organizational priorities—supporting growth, performance, and long-term sustainability while safeguarding Futuro Health’s strong, values-based culture. Anchored in high emotional intelligence, the Director of People & Engagement serves as a trusted advisor on complex people matters, applying empathy, sound judgment, and accountability. This role is ideal for a seasoned people leader with deep HR expertise, experience supporting fully remote and growing organizations, and a strong desire to contribute senior-level leadership within a mission-driven nonprofit.
Essential Job Functions:
People Strategy & Business Enablement
- Translate organizational priorities into actionable people strategies that support growth, execution, and impact.
- Partner with executive leadership to anticipate workforce needs, identify risks, and build plans that enable business outcomes.
- Ensure organizational design, roles, and capabilities are aligned with strategic goals.
Talent Management & Bench Building
- Lead end-to-end talent strategies including workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, development, and retention.
- Build a strong internal talent bench through succession planning, leadership development, and career pathway design.
- Strengthen manager capability in coaching, performance management, and team leadership.
Employee Relations & Complex Situations
- Serve as the lead advisor on sensitive and complex employee relations matters, applying sound judgment and discretion.
- Navigate difficult personnel situations with clarity, fairness, and a focus on organizational health.
- Equip managers to address issues early, constructively, and consistently.
Performance & Accountability
- Drive a performance culture grounded in clear expectations, regular feedback, and accountability.
- Oversee performance management processes that are practical, consistent, and aligned with organizational values.
- Support leaders in addressing underperformance and making tough decisions when needed.

People Operations, Systems, Compensation & Benefits
- Oversee core HR operations including HRIS, compensation and benefits management, policies, retirement plan, and compliance.
- Ensure systems and processes are efficient, scalable, and aligned with the organization’s people strategy.
- Manage vendor relationships and continuously improve the employee experience through streamlined operations.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Maintain strong compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and nonprofit requirements.
- Proactively mitigate risk while avoiding unnecessary bureaucracy or process burden.
- Balance legal requirements with practical, people-centered solutions.
Culture & Engagement
- Steward and strengthen organizational culture, ensuring Futuro Health’s mission and values are consistently reflected across performance, collaboration, and employee experience.
- Lead enterprise-wide engagement efforts, including All-Hands planning, and serve as a trusted, visible connector for employees around culture, connection, and belonging.
- Partner with leaders to build high-performing, inclusive teams that drive engagement, accountability, and long-term talent retention.
Qualifications:
- 8–12+ years of progressive leadership experience in human resources, talent, or people operations, with at least 3–5 years in the lead HR role of an organization.
- Experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization of comparable size and complexity (approximately 100–200 employees preferred), with the ability to balance mission, growth, and operational rigor.
- Demonstrated success putting in place and leading people strategy in a multi-state, fully remote environment while fostering connection, engagement, and shared accountability.
- Ability to align people strategies with organizational goals, using data, insight, and thoughtful judgment to drive measurable outcomes while considering the human impact of decisions.
- Strong judgment and experience navigating complex employee relations and organizational challenges, bringing empathy, fairness, and discretion to sensitive situations.
- Proven track record of developing talent and leaders, including performance management, leadership coaching, and building manager capability at all levels.
- Experience overseeing core people operations in a multi-state organization, including HR systems (Paylocity preferred), benefits, retirement plans, compensation programs and benchmarking (Salary.com preferred), performance management, and compliance. Experience in payroll process a plus.Â
- Working knowledge of payroll processes, multi-state taxation, and wage and hour compliance to ensure accurate implementation of HR-led compensation and pay changes.
- Exceptional interpersonal and influencing skills, with the ability to build trust, listen deeply, and partner effectively with employees, leaders, and external stakeholders.
- Strong proficiency in HRIS and people systems, with the ability to leverage data, analytics, and emerging AI-enabled tools to generate insight and improve effectiveness; working knowledge of Microsoft 365 productivity tools and environment.
- Budget management experience, including resource allocation and financial stewardship.
- Thrive in a highly collaborative organization with hands on execution within a small, high impact team.

Supervisory Responsibility: This role includes direct supervisory responsibility and is expected to provide mentorship, coaching, and leadership support to strengthen individual and team effectiveness.
Work Environment/Travel: This is a remote role with occasional travel required as business needs dictate, including meetings, conferences, and organizational events. Participation in these in-person gatherings is critical to strategic alignment, cross-department collaboration, culture building, and overall organizational effectiveness, which cannot be fully achieved in a virtual setting.
